Academy Award Nominees Announced

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences announced the nominees for its 82nd Academy Awards Tuesday morning.  Anne Hathaway (Devil Wears Prada, Alice In Wonderland) and MPAA President Tom Sherak announced the nominees.

As expected, Avatar led the race with nine nominations including best picture and achievement in directing for James Cameron.  Cameron's ex-wife and director Kathryn Bigelow tied the lead with nine nominations for The Hurt Locker and compete in many of the same categories.  Quentin Tarantino's Inglourious Basterds came in third with eight nominations.  Up In The Air was also no surprise in racking up the nominations for George Clooney, Vera Farmiga, Anna Kendrick and director Jason Reitman (Juno).

Big surprises in the Best Picture category include District 9 (but well-deserved) and A Serious Man from Ethan and Joel Cohen.  For a partial list of the nominees, read below.
