Seth Rogen hosted the 27th Annual Independent Spirit Awards Saturday in Santa Monica. Many of the same Academy Award nominees were present for the smaller award show on the beach. Academy Award nominee Michelle Williams scored her first win at the Spirit Awards after five nominations for Best Female Lead in My Week with Marilyn.  Best Supporting Actor favorite for the Academy Award won a Spirit Award for Best Supporting Male for his performance in The Beginners and odds-on Oscar favorite Alexander Payne and his co-writers nabbed the Spirit award for adapting The Descendants screenplay.

The Artist's was clearly the winner at the independent film awards with the film taking the grand price of Best Feature, Jean DuJardin winning for Best Male Lead, director Michele Hazanavicius was named Best Director, and Guillaume Schiffman for Best Cinematography.  The only category The Artist didn't dominate was the Best Screenplay category which went to the writers of The Descendants' Alexander Payne, Nat Faxon, and Jim Rash.

The Descendants screenplay is predicted to take the Best Adapted Screenplay Sunday for the Academy Awards but the clear forerunner is The Artist.  The Academy Awards airs Sunday, February 29th on ABC.
