The History Channel is gearing up for the fourth season of its hit show, VIKINGS, to begin in 2016 and the cast has been revealing some important details concerning the upcoming plot. We're going to try to keep this article as reasonably spoiler-free as possible for those who haven't had time to catch up with Ragnar Lothbrok and his squad, but beware if you're yet to finish the third season.

According to the International Business Times, the fight for power between the Norse is about to get real with Ragnar (Travis Fimmel), brother Rollo (Clive Standen) and son Bjorn Ironside (Alexander Ludwig, Cato from THE HUNGER GAMES) all working on their own schemes for control.

Travis Fimmel Vikings by Gage SkidmoreThe site also hinted that the relationship between the ever-restless Ragnar and Princess Aslaug (Alyssa Sutherland) may be on the rocks, which could have far-reaching political ramifications for the upcoming season. Additionally, Ragnar's son Bjorn may be having revenge fantasies concerning uncle Rollo but we'll stop short of getting to much into detail. Standen was recently seen in the IMAX extravaganza, EVEREST.

Vikings, not unlike zombies, have seen a resurgence in popularity much in thanks to the show, which has seen surprising success with both critics and the TV ratings. It might not be the most historically accurate show in the world, but it's faithful enough to the source material to help suspend disbelief while crafting a world that is both exciting and engrossing. It's certainly not a documentary by any means. However, VIKINGS provides newcomers with a solid introduction to the history of the culture and should inspire many to do more research of their own.

Did you know that there's even a popular card game named after the fierce Scandinavians? Wild Viking is a card game that combines roulette and poker where a player tries to draw the right combination of cards from a 52-card deck (including jokers). The twist on the traditional game of chance has become so popular that UK-based platform Betfair has a variation of the title. In addition to being playable on their site, the game can be played on mobile devices for fans looking to pillage the tables on the go. It's worth noting that, elsewhere on the site, zombies also show up in their own games (a testament to the aforementioned note that the undead and vikings have truly taken over).

While the viking is definitely enjoying a bit more cultural clout than it has in recent years, it's important not to overestimate the draw of the horned warriors. Another prominent viking named Ragnar, the mascot of the NFL's Minnesota Vikings, thought he'd be able to cash in on the newfound popularity but grossly overvalued his own importance to the team. ESPN reports that Joe Juranitch, who had portrayed the motorcycle riding mascot since 1994, was asking for $20,000 a game, which would have made him one of the highest paid mascots in all of sports. Juranitch was promptly fired by the Vikings for his audacity. Although Ragnar was a beloved staple of the Minnesota football team, even celebrity mascots like the legendary Phillie Phanatic thought that Ragnar overstepped with his exorbitant asking price.

As of yet, there's still no official release date for season four of VIKINGS, but early reports say the series should be due back by the beginning of 2016.
