Disney CinemaCon 2024 Amy Poehler Dwayne Johnson Anthony Mackie

At CinemaCon in Las Vegas Thursday, the Walt Disney Studios presented their upcoming slate from Marvel, Walt Disney Animation, Searchlight Pictures and 20th Century Studios with an exclusive look at the highly-anticipated titles such as DEADPOOL & WOLVERINE, INSIDE OUT 2, CAPTAIN AMERICA: BRAVE NEW WORLD, ALIEN: ROMULUS, MOANA 2 and much more. Amy Poehler, Anthony Mackie, Dwayne Johnson, Marvel's Kevin Feige and directors Shawn Levy and Barry Jenkins presented their projects.

Alan Bergman, co-chairman of Disney Entertainment, took to the stage at The Colosseum at Caesar’s Palace as did Tony Chambers, executive vice president and head of theatrical distribution. Marvel executive Kevin Feige also presented Marvel's slate.

KINGDOM OF THE PLANET OF THE APES

The first feature presentation was 13 minutes of footage from 20th Century Studios, KINGDOM OF THE PLANET OF THE APES directed by Wes Ball, which opens in theaters nationwide on May 10. The extended first look introduced us to the characters and the events that propel a young ape's journey to find his family.

YOUNG WOMAN AND THE SEA

Daisy Ridley stars in the true story of Trudy Ederle in YOUNG WOMAN AND THE SEA. Ederle was the first woman to swim across the English Channel in 1905 despite many challenges and chauvinism. Jerry Bruckheimer appeared in a video message and introduced the first trailer which you can see here.

INSIDE OUT 2

Amy Poehler reprises her role as Joy in the sequel to INSIDE OUT.  Poehler didn't come empty-handed, surprising attendees with the first 35 minutes of the Pixar film, which opens in theaters June 14.

In the preview, we meet new emotions as Riley enters her teen years and puberty. Audiences were rolling in laughter the entire 35 minutes, which is a good sign that the sequel will be equally as entertaining or funnier than the original.

Marvel Studios

Producer and Marvel president Kevin Feige kicked off his portion with an update on THE FANTASTIC FOUR and THUNDERBOLTS.  THE FANTASTIC FOUR will start production, shooting in the IMAX format, a first for the Marvel franchise. THUNDERBOLTS* is currently in production, and will also shoot in IMAX. The film's title now has an asterisk at the tail end which Feige pointed out but he's keeping the reason a secret until after the release.

Florence Pugh appeared in a video message on location and shared her excitement for the project, but didn't offer any further insight.

CAPTAIN AMERICA: BRAVE NEW WORLD

Next, Feige welcomed the new Captain America, Anthony Mackie to the stage and introduced a first look at the film which hit theaters on February 14, 2025.

In the first sequence, Sam Wilson is summoned by the President of the United States to the White House. Thaddeus "Thunderbolt" Ross is now the Commander-in-Chief.  Harrison Ford replaced the late William Hurt who played the character in the previous Avenger movies.

The President wants Sam to re-assemble the Avengers for an important mission. In the next scene, Ford is in a situation room-type setting where Sam and a group of people including Isaiah Bradly, the original Captain America introduced in the Disney+ series, The Falcon and the Winter Soldier, are receiving a briefing from Ross. Suddenly we see Isaiah's eyes go blank as if under a trance and attacks Ross. The same occurs with other people in the room. Sam jumps into action. An action montage follows with Wilson in full costume.

DEADPOOL & WOLVERINE

Feige transitioned into rated-R mode for DEADPOOL & WOLVERINE, cursing to describe the first rated-R Marvel movie. "It's fuckin' awesome," said the Marvel honcho. He welcomed director Shawn Levy who introduced a lengthy clip.

We find Wade wearing a wig and working as a used car salesman. He has put his Deadpool days in the past.  It's no surprise that he's not very good at it during a test drive with a family.

After work, Wade meets up with Rob Delaney's Peter (from DEADPOOL 2) and arrives at his apartment for a surprise birthday party with his friends and Vanessa (Morena Baccarin).  Vanessa and Wade are no longer a couple. Dopinder (Karan Soni), Colossus, Negasonic Teenage Warhead (Brianna Hildebrand), and Yuko (Shioli Kutsuna) are there to celebrate.

The TVA''s Minutemen (from the Loki Series) interrupt the party and yank Wade out of his reality to the TVA where Succession's Matthew MacFadyen explains to Wade why he's there. They need Deadpool to help save the "sacred timeline." On one of the timelines, Chris Evan's Captain America appears on one of the TV screens as does Chris Hemsworth's Thor crying over the body of Deadpool. The scene is taken out of THOR 2 when Thor is mourning the death of Loki.

Wade signs up and turns to the screen saying, "Suck it, Fox. I’m going to Disneyland." A tailor makes Wade's new suit.

ALIEN: ROMULUS

DON'T BREATHE director Fede Alvarez takes the helm of the next installment in the ALIEN franchise with ALIEN: ROMULUS. The stars and filmmakers were not present but producer Ridley Scott and the director/writer appeared in a video message to introduce a special look at the upcoming film, opening in theaters on August 16.

Featuring a mostly young cast, the first scene kicks off in an intense moment when three crew members are trapped inside a small space with face huggers as their fellow crew members are outside screaming. The latter part of the scene appears in the trailer when a face hugger escapes the small space and attaches to someone's face.

In another scene, that character is now having chest pains, and ALIEN fans know what that means - a chest-bursting scene. The scene drags out as Isabel Merced's character attempts to help her, but she reacts like a deer in headlights and doesn't move away.  The two characters are now in a runaway pod that is crashing into the main spacecraft endangering the other crew members.

MUFASA: THE LION KING

Oscar® winner Barry Jenkins then took to the stage to talk about Disney’s MUFASA: THE LION KING,  the follow-up to 2019’s global phenomenon, and showcase the teaser trailer for the film, which opens in theaters on December 20. Told in flashbacks, MUFASA: THE LION KING reveals the rise of one of the greatest kings of the Pride Lands as Rafiki, Timon, and Pumbaa share the story of Mufasa with a young lion cub.

MOANA

The Studio closed out the presentation with a surprise appearance by Dwayne Johnson, who came to a stage filled with Polynesian drummers and dancers from Tiana Liufau’s Nonasina (Liufau is the choreographer on the “Moana” films). Johnson busted his own moves, joining the dancers.

The clips screened were largely musical numbers with Moana and the villagers, but Maui didn't make the cut in the sneak peek.

Johnson returns as the voice of Maui in Walt Disney Animation Studios’ “Moana 2,” opening in theaters on November 27.

SEARCHLIGHT PICTURES

On June 21, “Kinds of Kindness,” which will premiere this summer at the Cannes Film Festival, opens exclusively in theaters—directed by Yorgos Lanthimos, the film stars recent Oscar® winner Emma Stone, who is joined by Jesse Plemons, Willem Dafoe, Margaret Qualley, Hong Chau, Joe Alwyn, Mamoudou Athie, and Hunter Schafer. The first footage from 20th Century Studios’ “The Amateur” was then screened exclusively in the room.
