Kristin Wiig Interview: Bridesmaids Almost Called 'Naked Boobs & Guns'

"Saturday Night Live" alum Kristin Wiig stars as Annie in BRIDESMAIDS, a down-and-out single women with only her best friend Lillian (Maya Rudolph) to rely on. That is until Lillian becomes engaged and plans her wedding with Annie with a rival bridesmaid competing for Lilian's attention. Melissa McCarthy ("Mike & Molly"), X-Men: First Class' Rose Byrne and "The Office's" Ellie Kemper round out the female-driven film.
Most men would shy away from a movie titled BRIDESMAIDS but the slogan on the poster suggests the comedy is much more than a chick flick. "From the producer of Superbad, Knocked Up, and The 40-Year-Old Virgin." But will the promise of some raunchy action get men into the movie theater without a girlfriend or wife dragging them along?
At a recent press conference in Beverly Hills with the BRIDESMAIDS cast, director and producer, Kristen Wiig, who co-wrote the script with Annie Mumolo, joked that it could've been called "Naked Boobs & Guns' to get the male audience in. "It didn't have any one of those things so we changed it," she told CineMovie jokingly. Kidding aside, the funny woman did find it challenging coming up with a film name. "We had a really hard time trying to think of the title... to be honest."
Judd Apatow also told CineMovie the initial title was Maid of Honor but when a friend warned him that he wanted to use the same name, Judd advised against it. Judd's friend beat him to the punch and made a revision to the name -- Made of Honor. "He outplayed me,." said the producer of Superbad. Eventually, they "gave up," according to Judd. Kristen seconded that emotion, "it was hard."
BRIDESMAID director Paul Feig ("The Office"), a veteran tv director, didn't want to alienate female viewers by catering to males. "The feeling was it was always going to play in previews that it's about a wedding with women so we didn't want to do is alienate the female audience by pretending it wasn't what it was. "
One thing it doesn't have to pretend to be is funny. Early word-of-mouth suggest both sexes are finding the movie a riot and making comparisons to The Hangover.
Like The Hangover, BRIDESMAIDS could possibly be the sleeper hit this summer.
BRIDESMAIDS is in movie theaters May 13, 2011.
