Lionsgate is ramping up the action with RUN THE NIGHT, a heart-pounding thriller set in the dark underbelly of Amsterdam, starring and produced by Chris Pine. Announced Monday, Lionsgate has secured worldwide rights to the film, which marks the feature directorial debut of veteran action maestro Robert Alonzo.
The film follows a seemingly mild-mannered banker who becomes the target of a $10 million bounty after being accused of betraying the Dutch mob. Dumped naked in the middle of Amsterdam, he must navigate a gauntlet of violent gangs by dawn to save his wife and child—uncovering a far more dangerous identity than anyone expected.
Alonzo, whose action pedigree includes DEADPOOL, THE BATMAN, and THE FLASH, brings decades of experience as a second unit director and stunt coordinator to the director’s chair. With a reputation for crafting character-driven action, he is poised to redefine what it means to make a mid-budget action movie.
“This is going to be a riveting and explosive thriller,” said Adam Fogelson, chair of the Lionsgate Motion Picture Group. “Chris is an incredible actor with the warmth and physicality to make this character unforgettable.”
Joining Pine in producing are Todd Lieberman and Alex Young of Hidden Pictures, John Glenn (who also penned the screenplay with Alex Davidson), and Ian Gotler under Pine’s Barry Linen banner. Glenn is also the creative force behind Lionsgate TV’s upcoming Robin Hood series for MGM+.
Lieberman praised the team, saying, “Rob Alonzo is the next great action director. With Rob’s talent behind the camera and our movie star Chris in front, I’m excited by what we have in store for audiences.”
Pine, best known for his roles in WONDER WOMAN, the STAR TREK films, and DUNGEONS & DRAGONS: HONOR AMONG THIEVES, said he’s thrilled to reunite with Alonzo and dive into such a rich, layered role. “There are so many places for this character to go,” he noted. “I’m excited about the possibilities of bringing him to life on the big screen.”
With a gritty setting, a ticking-clock premise, and a powerhouse team both in front of and behind the camera, RUN THE NIGHT promises to be a pulse-pounding addition to Lionsgate’s action slate.
