300: RISE OF AN EMPIRE Star Doesn’t Mind Playing Ruthless Female

Eva Green in 300: RISE OF AN EMPIRE

Eva Green relishes in being the only kick-ass female in 300: RISE OF AN EMPIRE, and director Noam Murro believes the actress shouldn’t be apologetic for portraying a ruthless female character.

300: RISE OF AN EMPIRE director Noam Murro and the film’s stars Rodrigo Santoro, Eva Green, and Sullivan Stapleton made an appearance at this year’s Comic Con to promote the prequel to Zack Snyder's 300 starring Gerard Butler.  The stars and helmer opened up during a press conference about what they liked most about making of the film.

Eva Green considers this her first action although we’ve seen her in genre films as a Bond Girl.  In 300: RISE OF AN EMPIRE, Green's Artemisia is one angry lady seeking revenge on the Greeks and the Greek general Themistocles (Sullivan Stapleton). She loves that she is the only female commander in the Persian fleet and didn’t mind picking up “a sword and slicing characters in half,” she said at the press conference.  Playing Artemisia certainly proved physical, but she quite enjoyed the challenges.

Director Noam Murro, who takes over for Zack Snyder, feels that men can be ruthless on screen and be accepted for it, while female aggressors are ridiculed for it.

“Men don’t have to apologize for being ruthless, but women do.”

Eva Green’s character certainly doesn’t make any apologies when dicing and slicing her opponents in the preview. At this point, she might make Xerxes look like a saint. Rodrigo Santoro reprises his role as Xerxes, but this time we’re seeing his “humane” side, according to the Brazilian-born actor.

“What I liked about doing the sequel was creating a humanity to Xerxes’ character that wasn’t present in the first film.”

Murro certainly felt the pressure of taking over such a well-known film based on a Frank Miller novel, which is why he kept the first film’s DNA and thread it through the prequel. That includes working with CGI, which the first film relied heavily on. Sets are limiting to the Israeli-born director in creating new worlds, so the ability to experiment more in CGI proved helpful.

So far, the teaser trailer to 300: RISE OF AN EMPIRE has proved a winner with online fans with the preview going viral.  The cast and director don’t know what to attribute that too, but they’re anxious for the film’s release for fans of the first film to return to that world.

300: RISE OF AN EMPIRE opens March 7, 2014.
