Behind 'The Cat in the Hat' Scenes: Bill Hader's Time-Bending Talent

Bill Hader in SNL playing Cat in the Hat news

In the upcoming THE CAT IN THE HAT animated film, audiences can expect plenty of zany antics, musical rhymes, and classic Seussian mayhem—but there’s also some jaw-dropping voice wizardry happening behind the scenes. In a recent Q&A for the release of the teaser trailer, director and co-writer Alessandro Carloni and voice star Bill Hader pulled back the curtain on one particularly wild scene that showcases Hader’s unexpected (and slightly spooky) vocal talent.

When Time Rewinds... and Bill Hader Rewinds With It
“There is one scene in which the character has to literally move backward in time,” Carloni shared. “Usually, we use filters and digital techniques to rewind voices. But Bill was able to create the sound of a voice moving forward and warping and playing backward.”

Yes—without any effects or audio trickery, Bill Hader actually reversed his own voice, live.

“We had to tell our animators, ‘Just so you know, that’s actually Bill Hader,’” Carloni said.

Hader laughed it off: “That’s what I was referring to. I do that in life! If I mess something up and someone says, ‘It’s supposed to go back that way,’ I’ll go, ‘Oh yes, yes, yes, yes,’ and I’ll go back over to it.” And then Hader rewound his words flawlessly in an impromptu bit. Impressive!

Carloni’s response? Pure admiration—and a touch of awe:

“People used to be burned as witches for these kinds of skills.”

The Magic of Voice Acting… Literally
This moment not only highlights Hader’s improvisational brilliance but also the kind of playful, inventive energy powering this new take on THE CAT IN THE HAT. It’s a reminder that while animation may rely on technology, it’s often the sheer creativity of the humans behind the scenes that gives the film its spark.

So when THE CAT IN THE HAT hits theaters, listen closely. That backward-talking, time-twisting moment? That’s not post-production wizardry. That’s just Bill Hader being Bill Hader—and maybe, just maybe, a little bit of a witch.
