Besides appearing in the American television hit Dallas, Kuno Becker is staying close to his Mexican roots by starring as the famous Mexican general who won the battle over the French in the Spanish war drama, CINCO DE MAYO: LA BATALLA. CineMovie sits down with the actor to talk about his historical-based character.
While most Americans think of Cinco de Mayo as another excuse to party, the win over the invading French army on May 5, 1829 in Puebla, Mexico also was a victory for the United States. CineMovie’s Pili Montilla sat down with the Mexican heartthrob who gave us a bit of a history lesson from the Cinco De Mayo battle.Kuno Becker plays General Ignacio Zaragoza, Mexico’s Secretary of War during Benito Juarez’s presidency, who resigned his post to lead the Mexican forces in the East against Napoleon III’s invading army. The thirty-five year old actor tells CineMovie he was well-versed in the history of the famous figure, having studied in school and seeing his image on the peso (Mexican paper currency). His biggest surprise in researching him was that he was like any other human being, in that he too had doubts about his decisions. Kuno found that part of the character the most relatable.
From his experience, Kuno tells us that most people mistake Cinco de Mayo for Mexico’s Independence Day, but the battle at the small town of Puebla has much more meaning for the United States. Kuno explains the win over the French had greater significance during the Civil War. Napoleon III not only planned to sack Mexico, but would march on Texas and join the Confederate Army against President Abraham Lincoln’s North. CineMovie, for one, was guilty of not knowing that important piece of information about Mexican and United States history. Kuno hopes the film will not only be entertaining, but educate audiences about the important date.
“Apart from entertaining, this movie is going to be able to break that a little bit more which is to really tell the audience and everybody what Cinco de Mayo is really about…”
