Peter Jackson Interview: One-Year Wait Time is ‘Pretty Generous’

Peter Jackson pulls an Empire Strikes Back in THE HOBBIT: THE DESOLATION OF SMAUG with a cliffhanger that leaves you wanting more NOW, not a year from now. Peter Jackson in the past has nicely wrapped up each of the chapters in the The Lord of the Rings trilogy as he did with the THE HOBBIT: AN UNEXPECTED JOURNEY, but this second installment leaves the audience gasping when the credits start rolling just as it’s going to get even better. Finally, the Hobbit and dwarves square off with Smaug, the evil dragon and just as the cat and mouse game climaxes, the credits start rolling. Nearly the entire audience gasped and then laughed realizing that they'll have to wait an entire year for the next scene.
At the recent Los Angeles press conference, CineMovie asked the THE HOBBIT: THE DESOLATION OF SMAUG director about how they came about choosing the cut off point for the movie.
“There certainly was discussion about it. But hey! It was just an opportunity… I mean look, it was just a chance .. it’s very rare that you get to do films back to back whether its 2 or 3 films back to back and to actually be able to just end on a hanger and I think you know… I do know what happens in the film and you will see that in a year’s time. “
He also recalls being a teen when Empire Strikes Back did the same with the rescue of Han Solo being left for the next Star Wars installment, Revenge of the Jedi.
“It was three years before the next one came out. We’re being pretty generous with one year. “
I, too, remember that as well and recall being very upset over it, but in THE HOBBIT: THE DESOLATION OF SMAUG, the initial surprise eventually wears off since a year will go by quickly.
Peter Jackson also added that television and movie fans are probably getting used to long haitus because of shows like Breaking Bad, which Jackson recalls also left viewers haging for a while.
At least Peter Jackson should be flattered that people have that reaction because it means fans are enjoying the second installment of The Hobbit trilogy and will most likely return to theaters 365 days later to watch the finale of The Hobbit franchise.
THE HOBBIT: THE DESOLATION OF SMAUG continues in 2014 on December 15.
