Marvel Studios is making a bold statement about its faith in the upcoming THUNDERBOLTS movie by launching early fan screenings (sold out) in partnership with Fandango and IMAX—well over a week before its official release. It’s a move that’s become synonymous with confidence in Hollywood, and fans of the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) are taking notice.
On April 22, select IMAX theaters in 10 major cities—including Los Angeles, New York, Chicago, and San Francisco—will host complimentary fan screenings of THUNDERBOLTS for those lucky enough to grab a first-come, first-served ticket via Fandango. This early access is typically reserved for Marvel’s biggest bets, and offering a glimpse of the studio’s newest team-up film this far in advance signals a strong belief in the movie’s appeal. Fans have already scooped up all the tickets on the Fandango site.
THUNDERBOLTS brings together some of the MCU’s most intriguing and morally gray characters, including Florence Pugh’s Yelena Belova, Sebastian Stan’s Bucky Barnes, and David Harbour’s Red Guardian. These aren’t your typical superheroes—they’re a ragtag team of antiheroes and outcasts facing their past demons while forced into a high-stakes mission orchestrated by Julia Louis-Dreyfus’ Valentina Allegra de Fontaine.
This unconventional squad sets THUNDERBOLTS apart from the classic Avengers mold, and the decision to spotlight the film in premium IMAX format for early audiences is a smart move. It not only heightens the cinematic experience but also helps build positive word of mouth—a strategy Marvel has leveraged in the past to great success.
With director Jake Schreier at the helm, a screenplay from Eric Pearson and Joanna Calo, and Kevin Feige steering the ship as producer, the film appears positioned to surprise fans and reinvigorate Marvel’s post-Endgame narrative.
The excitement is already building thanks to the new trailer and poster (below), which tease a darker, edgier tone, a hint of redemption, and the signature Marvel blend of high-stakes action and character-driven storytelling.
If Marvel was ever uncertain about a title, this kind of rollout wouldn’t be happening. By pulling back the curtain early for THUNDERBOLTS, the studio is telling fans and critics alike: “We’ve got something special here.”
Marvel Studios’ THUNDERBOLTS hits theaters on May 2, 2025. Advance tickets are on sale now. For those hoping to catch the action early, check Fandango immediately—because these IMAX fan screenings won’t last long.
