Movie Review: 'M3GAN 2' - Campier But Fun

M3gan 2 movie review 2025

M3GAN 2.0 returns as a stronger and funnier AI doll. This sequel shifts the focus from horror to action and incorporates elements from the TERMINATOR movies.

Two years after the events of the first movie, Gemma (Allison Williams) resurrects M3GAN to protect Cady (Violet McGraw) from an even more formidable AI creation, Amelia (Ivanna Sakhno).

M3GAN 2.0 has become less hostile, exhibiting more Chucky-like feistiness and humor. This comedic take on the killer doll makes the sequel significantly more entertaining than the original. The AI doll has transformed into a different kind of killing machine, capable of teaming up with her former nemesis, Gemma. Given the nature of AI, this collaboration makes sense, although it occasionally feels far-fetched.

Returning Director and writer Gerard Johnstone capitalizes on the elements that made the first movie successful and amplifies them in the sequel. M3GAN’s affection for Cady or her directive to protect her infuses the movie with heart. Gemma’s struggles with parenting provide a grounded narrative. Additionally, Cady’s evolving teenage phase and her quest to find her place in the future of robotics add depth to the story.

Ivanna Sakhno in M3GAN 2 movie review 2025

The plot frequently parallels the TERMINATOR franchise, with the new AI robot adopting T-1000 cues from Terminator 2: JUDGMENT DAY. Ivanna Sakhno delivers a menacing performance as Amelia, embodying the same deadpan tone without any emotion. Her portrayal effectively contrasts with M3GAN.

SPOILER ALERT
The campy sequel takes a ridiculous turn upon the discovery of a lair filled with technical gadgets, all meticulously planned by the AI star. Fortunately for the movie, the audience can suspend belief due to the fun nature of the flick.

Jen Van Epps and Brian Jordan Alvarez also reprise their roles and contribute more to the story. Allison Williams also elevates her performance as Gemma, actively participating in the action sequences.
