SCREAM VI is the movie we should've seen in the previous installment from directors, Tyler, Gillett and Matt Bettinelli-Olpin (READY OR NOT).
This latest entry subverts the franchise’s rules and cranks the horror way up to deliver the best SCREAM movie since the original.
Ghostface takes NYC in SCREAM VI. The SCREAM 5 survivors move to the Big Apple to move on from their traumatic experience in Woodsboro to enjoy life as college students, but their past catches up to them. Jenna Ortega, Melissa Barrera, Jasmin Savoy Brown, Mason, Gooding and Courteney Cox return for more bloodshed along with another Ghostface survivor played by Hayden Panettiere.
From the get-go, horror movie rules are broken with some shocking revelations you don’t see coming. The opening sequence will leave most viewers with their jaws on the floor. The killings are brutal from the start, which sets up the tone for the rest of the movie. The faint of heart will certainly look away during the most graphic scenes in the franchise.
Ghostface is a lot more terrifying, in that he slays in public with no fear of onlookers which is something we have not seen in any of the prior movies. Having the killer run around NYC in familiar places makes it all the more suspenseful. In one scene on the subway car, the tension builds as the train’s lights flicker on and off, prolonging the suspense and the moment when the killer strikes.
The returning characters are much more likable now that the introductions are out of the way. And the new players are introduced as possible suspects so little is known about them which works for this whodunnit mystery.
The directors take much more liberties and have more fun in the process by going against expectations. In the previous installment, they played it safe by sticking to the familiar beats of the franchise. Here they break all the rules and anything goes.
The revelation of the killer in the final act is jarring because it comes out of the left field but at least it wasn't predictable. Although it does reach a level of cheesiness but all is forgiven because SCREAM VI is a good time at the movies.
SCREAM VI is a communal experience and should be seen in a theatrical setting when it opens on March 10.
