March of the Penguins may be one of our favorite nature films, but Disneynature’s Monkey Kingdom now ranks right up there. Narrated by Tina Fey, the nature film about monkeys from the jungles of South Asia is a riveting emotional journey that plays out like a movie.
Set among the ancient ruins in the storied jungles of South Asia, Maya, a clever and resourceful monkey, struggles to survive as a female in the lower eschalon of the hierarchical society. When a male monkey from outside their group courts Maya, the group leader banishes him after he impregnates Maya. Maya is left alone to raise her son and now the fight to survive has become even more important to her.
As expected Tina Fey’s commentary provides some of the laughs, but she also is the voice of Maya as she narrates the feelings of the subject. Maya may be an animal but the themes are very familiar to us humans. Maya’s journey into womanhood and motherhood pulls at your heart strings.
The breathtaking feature film arrives on Digital HD, Disney Movies Anywhere (DMA) & Blu-ray Combo Pack on September 15. Disneynature will donate a portion of first-week sales to Conservation International to help protect endangered species in their natural habitats.
Here’s what you’ll find in the bonus features.
