The good news for Hollywood is four reboots were box office gold while others didn’t pan out. As everyone knows, Jurassic World dominated 2015 while Mad Max: Fury Road was a surprise hit along with showing up on numerous year-end critics list for Best Picture. The Star Wars franchise awakened big time with The Force Awakens predicted to overtake Avatar and Titanic for all time box office champ title sometime in 2016. Let’s review what other “re-imaginings” will live another day for yet another follow up, and those which flopped right out the gate.

Universal Pictures and Buena Vista (Disney) dominated the domestic box office with their tent-pole films in 2015, but who was the ultimate winner among the many blockbusters? Jurassic World took a big bite out of the box office, but Star Wars: The Force Awakens swooped in to take the number one spot as the new year hit. The Star Wars reboot also overtook Jurassic World and Titanic to become the second highest grossing films of all time domestically behind Avatar. All-time worldwide, tar Wars: The Force Awakens ranks #7, but that hierarchy may be changing soon in 2016.

Last week Ridley Scott announced he had retitled the Prometheus sequel. What was known as Prometheus: Paradise Lost is now Alien: Covenant. Is Ridley Scott distancing himself from the movie that caused so much discord among fans? The James Bond new film SPECTRE enjoyed the biggest cinema opening in the United Kingdom at the box office, beating out Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban. The 24th James Bond adventure also shattered records in nearly every releasing foreign market. The film opens Friday in the States, but can it break records here as well.

That's how we're feeling with the announcement that Legendary has announced a monster line-up that includes Godzilla and King Kong coming together in GODZILLA VS KONG set for release in 2020. The first of a stand alone movie will be KONG: SKULL ISLAND in 2017, and a sequel to Godzilla in 2018 which will lead to the culmination of the two giants in one film.

At the D23 Expo, Disney gave fans a quick look at Emma Watson as Belle and her yellow ballgown in the live action version of BEAUTY AND THE BEAST during a sizzle reel of their upcoming films. Emma Watson made an appearance via a message from the London set in which she tells the audience of her dream come true in playing the famous Disney princess. Besides her message, President of Walt Disney Studios Motion Picture Production, Sean Bailey confirmed the cast and that the new fairytale is definitely a musical.

Filming gets underway today on J.K. Rowling’s script for FANTASTIC BEASTS AND WHERE TO FIND THEM. Set in the same wizarding world of Harry Potter, Harry Potter director David Yates takes the helm as production begins in England.
