Johnny Depp once again plays dress up for his role as the 18th Century vampire Barnabas Collins in the Tim Burton directed DARK SHADOWS, the duo's eighth film together. Ironically, Johnny Depp's first role in a Tim Burton movie also involved sharp objects on his hands. Barely unrecognizable as Edward Scissorhands, Depp not only donned scissors on his finger tips, but was bound in a skin-tight leather outfit to play the lonely boy creation. Edward Scissorhands (1990) was the first time audiences saw Johnny Depp transform from a pretty boy to a viable Hollywood star, and started of a long cinematic relationship with one of the most imaginative filmmakers out there.
Two decades later, the two reteam to bring their favorite childhood television show DARK SHADOWS to the big screen. As much as he loves working with his friend Tim Burton, "there's always some form of torture," he told CineMovie. The long fingers and nails were not originally written in the script, but masterminded by Burton for Depp to wear throughout the production as Barnabas. The long Nosferatu-inspired nails were the length of Depp's fingers, according to Depp, and not merely tips added to his fingertips. Of course that made any trips to the bathroom a bit difficult throughout the shoot.
Another famous cinematic vampire Chris Sarandon recently told Fright Night fans at the Monsterpalooza convention in Burbank, Ca that he felt sympathy for Depp's turn as the vampire Barnabas. During the Fright Night reunion with the cast and director, Chris recounted his misery wearing the nails even for a few scenes specifically when nature called. He imagined the same problem for Depp and felt "sorry" for him.
When CineMovie relayed Sarandon's message to Depp, he joked there's many reasons to feel sorry for him, but the nail prosthetics is not one of them. When it came to taking care of business in the bathroom, he revealed he had a team of people to help out. Imagine having that job?
"But it was okay because I had a troupe of people who would help me go to the bathroom. They had to have treatment afterwards but there okay now. That is true."
Depp assures us that is a true story and we believe him because it is Hollywood. We also believe Tim Burton tortures Depp as payback for his annoyingly good looks and genes.
DARK SHADOWS is in movie theaters May 11, 2012.
