Cloudy With A Chance Of Meatballs

In 2009, Columbia Pictures' and Sony Pictures Animation's CLOUDY WITH A CHANCE OF MEATBALLS will be the most delicious event since macaroni met cheese.

INTERVIEW: Voicing the characters was not so easy for Anna Faris and Bill Hader

Inspired by the beloved children's book, the film focuses on a town where food falls from the sky like rain. Bill Hader, star of Saturday Night Live and Night of the Museum: Battle of the Smithsonian, will voice Flint Lockwood, a young inventor who dreams of creating something that will improve everyone's life.   (User reviews below)

INTERVIEW: Cloudy directors Phil Lord and Chris Miller on the making of the film

Anna Faris (Scary Movie), who recently turned heads as the star of the comedy hit The House Bunny, takes on the role of Sam Sparks, a weathergirl covering the phenomenon who hides her intelligence behind a perky exterior. James Caan plays Tim Lockwood, Flint's technophobic father. Andy Samberg plays Brent, the town bully who has plagued Flint since childhood. Bruce Campbell plays Mayor Shelbourne, who figures out that Flint's invention can put the town, and more importantly himself, on the map and Mr. T plays the by-the-rules town cop Earl Devereaux.

Cloudy With A Chance Of Meatballs Movie Review

Cloudy With A Chance Of Meatballs is an imaginative, humorous, entertaining, three-dimension spectacular. I throughly enjoyed this film. Not being familiar with the source material, I trusted that directors Phil Lord and Christopher Miller would only add whatever was necessary to flush out a feature length script from a beloved children’s book, written by Judi Barrett and illustrated by Ron Barrett. This fantastical tale has been a children’s book favorite since 1978.Developing a new visual style and creating a back story for the town of Chewandswallow, directors Lord and Miller give us a young inventor named Flint Lockwood, who is obsessed with becoming the world’s greatest inventor. Voiced by Bill Hader, this young man invents a machine that causes the clouds to rain food. The town’s mayor, voiced by Bruce Campbell, sees this as an opportunity to save their small island after their chief industry, sardines, has gone bust because sardines are gross. He convinces young Lockwood to rig his machine to rain three meals a day, while the mayor invites the world to come see the phenomenon.
Anna Faris voices Sam Sparks, a young news station intern, who happens to be covering a local news conference when the first food-rain occurs. Having exclusive footage to the event and a secret passion for the science of weather, Sam and Flint become fast friends and join forces when the raining food problem becomes out of control. Additional cast members include James Caan, as Flint Lockwood’s tecnophobic father, Mr. T. as the local policeman, Bobbe’ J. Thompson as Cal, the policeman’s son and Andy Samberg as Baby Brent, a grow man still living off of the fame he achieved as a child model for the now defunct sardine company. Additional voice actors include Benjamin Bratt as Manny, Neil Patrick Harris as Steve The Monkey, and Al Roker as an anchorman.

When watching a film, I usually don’t focus on the technical aspects, I try to just enjoy the story. But in this film I was so impressed with the sound engineering that I can’t help but point it out. Imagine the monumental task of recording all the different sounds involved when food of all types hits the ground. In addition there was some very clever effects involved when sound had to be filtered through foreign objects. For example, when Flint Lockwood has a giant fishbowl land on top of him. The angry shouts of the community are muffled for comic effect until the glass breaks. Then Flint must hear the mob in their full voluminous roar.

I was also intrigued with the lighting effects. I don’t know who gets the credit for this in an animated film, but I was fascinated by the way the light played on reflective surfaces and through translucent materials. The three dimensional effects also severed this film well. As a adult, we often view animated films as a guardian to a small child, but I really enjoyed this film as a work of art. I found it visually stunning, interesting and most of all, entertaining. Even if you don’t have a child to bring to this film, go anyway. Let it bring out the child in you.

More on Robin Hood:

In 13th century England, Robin and his band of marauders confront corruption in a local village and lead an uprising against the crown that will forever alter the balance of world power. And whether thief or hero, one man from humble beginnings will become an eternal symbol of freedom for his people. Robin Hood chronicles the life of an expert archer, previously interested only in self-preservation, from his service in King Richard’s army against the French.

Upon Richard’s death, Robin travels to Nottingham, a town suffering from the corruption of a despotic sheriff and crippling taxation, where he falls for the spirited widow Lady Marion (Oscar® winner Cate Blanchett), a woman skeptical of the identity and motivations of this crusader from the forest. Hoping to earn the hand of Maid Marion and salvage the village, Robin assembles a gang whose lethal mercenary skills are matched only by its appetite for life. Together, they begin preying on the indulgent upper class to correct injustices under the sheriff. With their country weakened from decades of war, embattled from the ineffective rule of the new king and vulnerable to insurgencies from within and threats from afar, Robin and his men heed a call to ever greater adventure. This unlikeliest of heroes and his allies set off to protect their country from slipping into bloody civil war and return glory to England once more.

Aaron Green (Hill) gets things done. The ambitious 24-year-old has been given a career-making assignment. His mission: Fly to London and escort a rock god to L.A.’s world famous Greek Theatre for the first-stop on a huge comeback tour. His record mogul boss, Sergio Roma (Sean Combs), gives him one warning: “The artist is the worst person on Earth. Turn your back on him at your own peril.” British rocker Aldous Snow (Brand) is a brilliant musician, but due to a bad break up and nose-diving career, has fallen off the wagon and is now a drunken disaster. Weary of “yes men” and scared he’s entered the “greatest hits” moment in his career, Snow’s in the midst of a nihilistic downward spiral.

When he learns his true love, model/pop star Jackie Q (Rose Byrne), is in Los Angeles, Aldous makes it his quest to win her back…right before kick-starting his world domination. As the countdown to the concert begins, one innocent young man must navigate a minefield of London drug smuggles, New York City brawls and Vegas lap dances to deliver his charge safe and, sort of, sound… all while trying to remain faithful to his med student girlfriend (Elisabeth Moss). He may have to coax, lie to, enable and party with Aldous, but Aaron will get him to the Greek. www.gethimtothegreek.net    Genres:            Comedy
