While the DVD and Blu-ray extras are limited, MACHETE is a fun-filled time for your home entertainment system with a great cast led by an unlikely leading man Danny Trejo in a much-deserved starring-role with Michelle Rodriguez, Jessica Alba, Robert DeNiro, Steven Seagal, Cheech Marin and Lindsay Lohan. Set up, double-crossed and left for dead, Machete (Danny Trejo) is an ass-kicking ex-Federale who lays waste to anything that gets in his path. As he takes on hit men, vigilantes and a ruthless drug cartel, bullets fly, blades clash and the body count rises. Any way you slice it, vengeance has a new name--Machete.
Robert DeNiro is hilarious as a racist Texas Senator but the question still arises - how did they get DeNiro for this wild movie? Regardless, we're glad they did and for Steven Seagal who does a great job with the Mexican accent and dispelling the Spanish bad words like a pro. Cheech Marin is a hoot as an unconventional priest. Lindsay Lohan's doesn't stray far from her party girl image in the movie while the two female leads Jessica Alba and Michelle Rodriguez do their jobs as the sexy action heroines of MACHETE.
MACHETE is the type of movie enjoyed with a group so if you're at home watching alone, you have the option of selecting the audience reaction track over the film. You'll feel like your in a movie theater enjoying the raunchy scenes, massive blood splatter, and over the top action scenes along with a crowd. The audience track is not a laugh track and it actually sounds like it was recorded during a theatrical screening. The only drawback is the film's audio which is also recorded onto the audience track and therefore doesn't give you an optimal sound quality.
Also included on the MACHETE DVD and Blu-ray is five deleted scenes including a storyline left out of the movie. In two of the scenes, Jessica Alba has a twin sister living with her with a tendency of bedding strange men while on cough medicine. After watching the deleted scenes with the twins, it was a good choice leaving it on the cutting room floor.
Like most DVD releases, the lack of extras usually signify that a special edition version will be released later containing more behind the scenes footage like most Robert Rodriguez films on DVD. Don't we hate that?
With the Blu-ray and DVD special features lacking, the movie has to speak for itself. MACHETE is a film not to be taken seriously and enjoyed purely as entertainment. Some may be annoyed by the preachy message about illegal immigration but the performances and humor far outweigh the politics.
