Apart from playing a small role as a seductive killer vampire in Robert Rodriguez's From Dusk Till Dawn, Salma Hayek had yet to sink her teeth into a juicy role as the bad guy. But finally Hayek got her chance when Oliver Stone personally invited her to take on the role of the villain in the adaptation of the Don Winslow novel. In SAVAGES, her men call her "Madrina, which means "The Godmother" in Spanish, an obvious reference to the greatest mob movie of all time - The Godfather. The head of the Baja cartel is also known as "La Reina" (The Queen), which Hayek says helps intimidate her men.
From the set of SAVAGES, Hayek describes her role of Elena Sanchez as a ruthless woman who must keep people in check to dominate a business usually run by men. In the movie, Elana Sanchez orders her men to kidnap the girlfriend (Blake Lively) of two Southern California marijuana growers (Aaron Johnson, Taylor Kitsch) who refuse to partner with her dope dealing business. In the video, Hayek explains she is rarely offered villain roles."
"I don't get offered villains that much, so Elena was so much fun to play. She's strong and lives in a world that is violent and scary, and usually for men are in her position. It's daunting and difficult for men but even tougher for a woman, and she's able to handle it."
SAVAGES also hits home for the Mexican actress. The war on drugs isn't merely a Mexican problem, but a North American drug war in which one country is selling while another is buying. "What I hope the movie will do is make people aware of the level of the drug trade problem between Mexico and the United States. It's not just a Mexican problem," she says.
In a recent interview with the film's director, Oliver Stone said the role of Elena Sanchez was a much smaller role in Don Winslow's novel, but he wanted to make her a bigger than life character in the movie and imagined Salma Hayek in the role from the on-set. Seems like he found the perfect Reina.
SAVAGES arrives in movie theaters July 9, 2012.
