There is a moment in CASINO ROYALE when James Bond (by the brilliant Daniel Craig) sits at the poker table, poisoned, his body shutting down, and does something unexpected. He bluffs. Not with the swagger of Connery or the raised eyebrow of Moore, but with the balls of a man who knows this hand might be his last. This is why Daniel Craig’s first movie as 007 became a classic when so many action films fade. it understood that true tension doesn't need that many special effects. Needs us being emotionally invested in the character and the outcome.
When the film arrived in 2006, it felt like a revelation. Here was a Bond stripped bare naked (that rope scene!) no invisible cars, no laser watches, just a man in a cool suit with a vulnerability we hadn’t seen before. The poker sequences, which could have been boring and mechanical, became the film’s stars. They understood something essential about storytelling. Danger is most present when it feels just around the corner.
Consider Le Chiffre, a villain who barely raises his voice. He doesn’t monologue about world domination. Weeping blood (ugh.) and calculating. His menace lives in an intense stare, the slight tremor of a hand. In another film, Bond would have fought him on a mountaintop or in a hollowed-out volcano Austin-Powers style. Here, they battle across the green felt, and it’s scarier than any explosion could be.

The choice to use poker instead of baccarat was spot on. While we’ll miss the whole Player-Banker back and forth. Poker is a game of hidden truths. Each player guards their story, revealing only what they must. What better metaphor for a spy? The film arrived when poker was enjoying a cultural moment, but that’s not why it works. It works because the game becomes a mirror. Bond learning to lie to others, yes, but more importantly, to himself.
Now the franchise stands at another crossroads. The next Bond will come, as MGM needs to make billions and billions. Will they understand what made this film great? Not the stunts or the set pieces, though those were fine, but knowing that real suspense comes from watching a man think, calculate and gulp as he decides whether to fold or go all in.
Great stories are great not because of how they scream, but by how the silent moments make you feel. Casino Royale knew this. Its poker scenes are masterclasses in restraint, in trusting the audience to lean forward without being pushed. That’s a lesson worth remembering, no matter who next picks up the Walther PPK.
