Will Ferrell is the latest non-Spanish speaking actor to make the promotional rounds on Spanish television. Following Tom Hanks' viral sensation with "Despierta America's" weather girl, the rest of Hollywood is getting in on the Spanish action.

Will Ferrell is the latest American actor to try his hand at reaching the Spanish-speaking Hispanic crowd when he appeared on "Despierta America" Tuesday morning with his CASA DE MI PADRE co-star Genesis Rodriguez, daughter of the legendary crooner Jose Luis Rodriguez aka "El Puma." The Hollywood star is relying heavily on Latino audiences for his new movie CASA DE MI PADRE, a novela-style comedy produced by his Gary Sanchez Productions team and shot entirely in Spanish co-starring Gael Garcia Bernal, Diego Luna, Efren Ramirez and the late Pedro Armendariz, Jr. He clearly saw the value of the Latino audience long before Tom Hank's appearance.
Ferrell, who grew up in Orange County is not fluent in Spanish so he learned his lines for CASA DE MI PADRE through memorization and phonetics. His limited Spanish was evident during his appearance with the "Despierta America" hosts in which they invited him and his co-star to make Arepas, a Venezuelen dish in honor of Genesis' heritage. For once, the Anchorman star was speechless as he tried to get a word in with the hosts. Genesis father "El Puma" who happens to have a cameo in CASA DE MI PADRE swooped in and stole the show.
A-list Hollywood stars on Spanish language programming was unheard of ten years ago when I started working in Hispanic marketing. Studios refused to grant top Spanish journalist access to movie stars because Hollywood believed Latino audiences were only interested in Latino talent. Spanish shows have also changed in that they were rarely interested in non-Spanish speaking stars.
This week, it was announced Spanish soap opera star William Levy has joined the cast of "Dancing with the Star's" this season on ABC. Are studios finally coming around to the Latino side? I guess it's a wait and see.
