There is no doubt Adam Sandler and Andy Samberg can pull off playing father and son in THAT'S MY BOY with their many similarities, but Adam confesses Andy is a "little better" version of himself.
When Andy Samberg debuted on Saturday Night Live in 2005, the comparisons to Adam Sandler began soon after. It's surprising that seven years went by before they teamed up on a Adam Sandler Happy Madison production. In the THAT'S MY BOY, Adam Sandler's Donny fathers a child in high school with a teacher and raises him as a single father until Todd's 18th birthday. After years of not seeing each other, Donny returns to create havoc to his son's new life.
At a recent press conference with THAT'S MY BOY cast and filmmakers, Adam Sandler revealed the pair became close during production. He says they "got tighter and tighter" as shooting went along with Andy becoming not just a co-star, but a collaborator who provided him with jokes and dialogue during his down time in his trailer. It reminded him of his early days with his buddies when they were constantly coming up with "stuff that feels fresh" and it was "all about being funny."
"He gave me good stuff in the movie…gave me good lines to say. That's not a common thing in my life where a co-star is looking out for me. It was beautiful."
Not only did he praise Samberg's "comedy chops" behind the scenes, but Sandler joked Samberg is a "little better, a little smarter, and a little better looking." Samberg looks good at all angles, he proclaimed, unlike himself who has to look dead on at the camera to look remotely attractive. Adam continued to praise his younger co-star by calling Samberg a "hard-worker" and a very focused person unlike Sandler when he was that age. During his early Hollywood career, Sandler says he was obsessed with "kicking-ass" and being "nuts." Samberg's obsession, however, is more about having "a good life". Sandler admires Samberg for those qualities.
Adam Samberg announced his plan to depart SNL after this season to pursue a movie career like most SNL alums. Sandler doesn't foresee a problem with Samberg's career.
"He's gonna have a nice life, and he'll also kick ass if he wants to."
THAT'S MY BOY is in theaters Friday, June 15.
