As THE BOURNE LEGACY’s logline suggest, “There Was Never Just One.” THE BOURNE LEGACY opens up the idea that there are more than just one “Bourne” around the world including female agents. At a recent interview with Jeremy Renner, Rachel Weisz, director Tony Gilroy, and writer Dan Gilroy in Los Angeles, Rachel loved the idea of returning to the Bourne series once again in the same capacity or even better – as a Bourne agent. In the fourth installment of the Bourne movies, Rachel plays Marta, a Treadstone scientist saved by Renner’s Aaron Cross before Treadstone kills any remaining loose end of the exposed program. The actress admits she wouldn't say no to being a female rogue agent if Tony and Dan Gilroy write the part for her.
Rachel wasn’t the only one that expressed interest in returning to the Bourne franchise. Jeremy Renner takes over for Matt Damon as a Treadstone-trained agent, and his experience on the film and the finale wet his appetite for more Bourne films in the future. “As far as the future of my character I'm excited that the architectures have cleverly left it wide open for fans like myself who are wondering what the hell is going to go on next," he said.
When Jeremy Renner took the role of agent Aaron Cross he never thought about comparing his character to that of Matt Damon’s character, Jason Bourne. "There are a new pallet of colors and a new canvas to paint upon. I felt connected to the idea of wanting to belong to something and that's what I initially connected to". Jeremy admits that the biggest challenge in this film was not getting hurt. "I wanted to do as much as possible because of the authenticity of the three films prior. I would have done a great injustice and service to this film if I did not do what was required". According to Jeremy if you didn't get banged up a bit then you're not really working hard enough.
Jeremy credits the Gilroy brothers for bringing THE BOURNE LEGACY together. With a new team at bay the Gilroy’s wanted to make sure they were able to bring the same aesthetics from the past films to this one. Tony spent a lot of time looking at the past three films and had a lot of conversations on what should be used that was already there. "We had an advantage because we’re blowing open all the doors on this film with a new canvas. We had free reign with a slightly different visual vocabulary and when it got to the action it had to have the maximum testosterone as possible".
In order to connect THE BOURNE LEGACY with the last Bourne film they got a little help from some old characters. Tony and Dan Gilroy thought it clever to have a phone call from the third Bourne film, The Bourne Ultimatum”, be the link to his new film. They also brought back a few older characters, "It was absolutely essential to have the characters come back for this film. If you see the film then you know how we use them... We couldn’t have done it without them". When it came to the writing process, the brothers admit that they didn't even have one argument over plot line. Tony's process when it comes to writing is to constantly surround himself around as many filmmakers as possible and to keep your ears open, and constantly ask what is the better idea?
Rachel Weisz seems to have the answer to that question.
THE BOURNE LEGACY is in theaters August 10th.
