‘Deep Water’ Movie Review: An Anxiety-Filled Action Movie

Deep Water, a high-stakes, riveting character-centric action film, delivers a satisfying experience on all fronts from veteran action director Renny Harlin (Die Hard 2, Deep Blue Sea).

After an international flight crashes in shark-infested waters, the remaining survivors must band together to avoid becoming the next meal. Aaron Eckhart and Ben Kingsley lead the ensemble cast, each bringing charisma and likability to their characters. Taron Egerton also joins the cast in a minor role.

Unlike other action films that rely on a single hero, Deep Water emphasizes the collective efforts of the flight attendants, passengers, and Eckhart’s airline captain. Their contributions to saving others lead to some sacrifices, and the characters are scattered among the wreckage, reminiscent of classic 70s disaster movies like Earthquake, The Poseidon Adventure, and The Towering Inferno. The filmmaker openly acknowledged his love for 70s movies and their influence on the film.

Harlin’s expertise in action direction shines through in the unique plane crash sequence, which stands out for its intensity and scope. The constant peril faced by the survivors adds to the film’s anxiety, as we root for different characters after their heroic actions that ultimately lead to tragedy.

KISS legend Gene Simmons, who serves as a producer under his new production banner, Simmons/Hamilton Productions, expresses his belief that Deep Water possesses the magic he always seeks in a movie.

In conclusion, Deep Water offers a thrilling and entertaining experience that delivers what it promises.
