With all the negative publicity in the media about the drug cartels and violence, the documentary HECHO EN MEXICO is a welcome change that captures Mexico’s beautiful side with all its richness in culture and music.
HECHO EN MEXICO can best be described as a musical road trip through Mexico as the filmmakers explore the richness of Mexican music from the traditional to the modern mixture of the various genres with Mexico’s popular musical figures and local folk artists. From traditional music to pop rock, to rap, the Spanish experiment takes the viewer through a musical odyssey covering every possible form of expression through songs that tell a story. Watch Trailer
Kinky, Lila Downs, Natalia LaFourcade, Alejandro Fernandez, Los Tucanes de Tijuana are only a few of the artists lending their talents to the film. Diego Luna, Mexican scholars, and local folk artists offer a unique perspective of the culture and its diverse people. The journey takes them to the remotest places where the influences of rap has made its way into the Indian communities as a form of expression.
Surprisingly, the beautiful portrayal of Mexico comes from British musician and filmmaker Duncan Brideman. In the 80s, he remixed music for Eurythmics, Paul McCartney, and many others. The film’s producer Lynn Faintchtein brought together the musical talent for HECHO EN MEXICO. The Mexican native has worked as a music producer and supervisor on various films like La Misma Luna, Maria Full of Grace and on all of Alejandro Gonzales Iñarritu’s movies (Amores Perros, Babel, 21 Grams).
Together they created one of the most fascinating project that is completely original. Basically, it’s a hippies view of Mexico. There is no other film that weaves a story through original songs, conversations, reflections, wisdom, and humor so well together that it leaves you feeling proud --especially if have connections to the country.
While some say it’s a long music video, HECHO EN MEXICO is much more like a corrido (narrative song). Like the traditional Mexican corrido, the narrative of the film is connected through music. The doc talks about the past, the present, and the future of the Mexican people as told through female pioneers like Chavela Vargas, Mexican actors, playwrights, and musicians. The film is not afraid to touch upon the controversial subjects such as the drug wars, immigration, and the class wars, but it’s done poetically.
Even if the music doesn’t get you, HECHO EN MEXICO’s cinematography captures the colorful people and landscapes that will leave you wanting more.
For fans of rock en español, HECHO EN MEXICO will especially delight music fans with its blend of genres and familiar faces. While many will have to enjoy the film through subtitles, music has always been universal, and anyone regardless of the language will be able to feel the passion behind it.
