MACHETE KILLS’ Robert Rodriguez, Danny Trejo and Alexa Vega Interview

The MACHETE KILLS director and stars sit down with CineMovie to discuss the wild sequel that’s a cross between James Bond and Empire Strikes Back, and Spy Kids’ Alexa Vega is also talking about her very adult role as an S&M assassin.

Danny Trejo returns as Machete in MACHETE KILLS and this time he’s after baddies Demian Bichir and Mel Gibson by orders of the United States President, Carlos Estevez aka Charlie Sheen.  This time he’s got a slew of cool little gadgets to fight off the evil-doers, including futuristic weapons such as the light saber machete.

Robert Rodriguez incorporates many references to the Star Wars sequel, Empire Strikes Back, which was inspired by a real person with aspirations to colonize Mars. American business magnate, investor, and inventor Elon Musk built a rocket and named it “Falcon” after the Millennium Falcon in Star Wars, his favorite film.  His meeting with the space enthusiast influenced the character of Voz played by Mel Gibson.  “It came from real life. You couldn’t make that stuff up,” says the Texas native.

Regarding her sexy role in MACHETE KILLS, Alexa Vega says she had to convince her Spy Kids director and co-star to let her be part of the cast.  In a very grown up role, Spy Kid Alexa Vega plays “Killjoy,” one of Sofia Vergara’s assassins.  Having worked with Danny Trejo and Robert Rodriguez in the Spy Kids franchise since she was 11 years of age, they looked at her as one of their own children, so getting past the S&M clothes would be a challenge.  However, she “owned it” on set which also gave her confidence in her real life.

Danny Trejo compares seeing Alexa in MACHETE KILL to seeing his daughter in a bikini for the first time.  He admits there was some awkwardness, but her confidence put him and Robert at ease.

MACHETE KILLS opens at a good time when films by Latino filmmakers are experiencing success at the box office.  Two Mexican imports, Instructions Not Included (Eugenio Derbez) and Pulling Strings (Jaime Camil) opened in the top 10 at the box office.  Robert tells us it has improved since he hit it big with El Mariachi in 1992.

“There’s an authentic voice that’s being presented. It’s changed a lot in the last 20 years.  Since I was there 20 years ago, it was grim. It’s not like it is today. It’s better, but it can get better.”

If MACHETE KILLS goes gangbuster at the box office, Hollywood will have no choice, but to cater more to that growing market of Latino movie-goers.
