CineMovie’s Fernando Esquivel sat down with the STAR TREK INTO DARKNESS actress who plays Uhura in the beloved sci-fi franchise. In the sequel to the 2009 hit directed by J.J. Abrams, Uhura’s romance with Spock continues to get complicated as the Vulcan’s inability to show human emotion certainly wears on the interspecies love birds. When asked if its any different than a relationship with your average earthling male, Zoe says that’s Uhura’s attraction to Spock is because of his half-human, half-Vulcan sensibility.  Uhura and Kirk, according to Zoe, are attempting to bring out Spock’s human side and make him realize its okay to show human emotion.

After Star Trek, Zoe told J.J. Abrams that for the next movie, Uhura should see more action and she got her wish.  In our interview with the New Jersey native from Dominican parents, she was happy with the progress of her character that reflects a strong female. “I wanted to see a better representation of an everyday woman that takes more participation in physical doings,” she told Fernando.

Zoe is no stranger to playing tough women on screen, haven proven herself as an action star in Colombiana, The Losers and of course in Avatar.  Next, she will be reprising her role as Neytiri in James Cameron’s Avatar sequels and becoming a Marvel superhero as Gamora in Guardians of the Galaxy.  In the interview, she credits her “great agent,” but she admits she seeks out roles that do justice to women.  She says the lack of good female roles makes her “sad.”

“I think it’s important for me to feel relevant and to see a more accurate portrayal of women in art.  When there’s a little bit of a famine, when it comes to movies where women aren’t represented properly, it really makes me sad. “

Zoe Saldana’s career is far from sad, however, as she embarks on roles that other actresses would die for.  Regarding her upcoming role as Marvel’s Gamora, she’s most excited to work with director James Gunn and the growing cast.  “I’m looking forward to being green. I was blue once so why not. “

Guardians of the Galaxy won’t be in theaters until 2014, but she returns for better action in STAR TREK INTO DARKESS starting May 17.
