Marvel's cinematic universe has been successful because their films are fun. Superhero movies should be entertaining because they are fantasy. DCEU hadn't learned that lesson until now with WONDER WOMAN. There's comedy, action and heart to this WONDER WOMAN making it the most memorable DCEU film to date. That’s not the only thing borrowed from the Marvel universe. WONDER WOMAN resembles CAPTAIN AMERICA: THE FIRST AVENGER in tone and spirit.

Watching PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN: ON STRANGER TIDES was the most unpleasant movie experience of my life. Luckily Disney learned from that hot mess of a movie, and DEAD MEN TELL NO TALES returns to the fun that made the original a hit. With a simple plot, a formidable new leading lady, a worthy villain played by the always effective Javier Bardem and a toned-down Jack Sparrow, PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN: DEAD MEN TELL NO TALES is worthy of returning to the high seas.

The good news is that ALIEN: COVENANT makes sense and Ridley Scott may have redeemed himself from the mess that was PROMETHEUS. However, the plot lines are all too familiar to ALIEN fans, but perhaps that’s what we wanted all along.

What’s the likelihood that James Gunn could capture lightning in a bottle twice? As with most sequels, expectations should be low especially for a follow-up to a beloved movie like GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY. That’s the best way to go into GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY VOL.2. GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY VOL.2 doesn’t capture the magic of the original movie, but you have a good time watching the band of misfits on another adventure.

Remember the cheesy Sinbad the Sailor adventure films in which he encountered monsters? That's what KONG: SKULL ISLAND reminds me of minus the cheese. KONG: SKULL ISLAND is a throwback to those classic adventure films featuring hideous creatures from the unknown. However, the action in KONG is far superior, brutal and director Jordan Vogt-Roberts clearly was influenced by APOCALYPSE NOW.

The holidays are meant to be happy and merry, but not if you see these three totally depressing movies. Current movie releases A MONSTER CALLS, MANCHESTER BY THE SEA and COLLATERAL BEAUTY all deal with death of a parent or child.  That definitely doesn’t scream holiday spirit.

PASSENGERS is not your ordinary boy meets girl love story. The trailer for the sci-fi flick is very misleading. It sells you on a Titanic-type love story set against a disaster action flick. On the contrary, Chris Pratt and Jennifer Lawrence have great chemistry, but their romance is far from romantic. Here’s why you should go in with an open mind to a film that’s off-kilter and quite screwed up.

EMPIRE STRIKES BACK was the darkest and grittiest of the STAR WARS film that is until ROGUE ONE:  A STAR WARS STORY.  Unlike other STAR WARS films, there are no cutesy-elements like R2-D2, the Ewoks or BB-8, and the light-hearted moments are kept to a minimum. While the film fits into the George Lucas universe with familiar elements, this is a far more serious film. Director Gareth Edwards has made this film his own.
