The MOANA sequel recaptures much of the charm of the original but falters when it comes to its musical numbers. Without Lin-Manuel Miranda’s signature touch, the soundtrack lacks the memorable magic that made the first film’s songs so iconic.
In this new adventure, MOANA once again sets sail across the seas of Oceania after receiving a message from her wayfinding ancestors about a lost island. Joined by Hei Hei, Pua, and three new companions, she eventually teams up with Maui for another epic journey.
Breathtaking Animation and Stunning Visuals
Visually, MOANA 2 surpasses its predecessor. The animation is more vibrant and jaw-droppingly beautiful, showcasing lush new landscapes beyond the sea. Each scene bursts with color and detail, offering viewers a feast for the eyes and a deeper exploration of Oceania’s wonders.
A Fresh Cast and Familiar Favorites
While the new characters bring plenty of humor, it’s clear that Hei Hei and Pua remain the fan-favorite sidekicks, stealing scenes with their lovable antics. Auli'i Cravalho returns as MOANA with an even stronger vocal performance, proving how much she’s grown as a singer since the first film.
The Missing Magic of Lin-Manuel Miranda
The absence of Lin-Manuel Miranda’s musical genius is keenly felt. Though a few songs earn applause, none reach the heights of How Far I'll Go or You're Welcome. Dwayne Johnson’s new musical number, in particular, falls flat. Attempting to capture Miranda’s Hamilton-inspired style, the lyrics “go onna MOANA” come off as awkward and cringy rather than clever. The songwriters’ efforts to emulate Miranda’s charm don’t hit the mark.
A Fun, Laugh-Filled Adventure
Despite its musical shortcomings, the screenplay by Jared Bush offers plenty of laughs and clever one-liners. The humor and heartfelt moments keep the story engaging, making it a delightful watch for audiences of all ages.
Verdict
MOANA 2 may not have the unforgettable songs of the original, but it’s still a visually stunning and entertaining journey. With its beautiful animation, lovable characters, and humor-filled script, it remains a fun family film that fans of the first movie will enjoy.
