Peter Jackson's two-film adaptation of J.R.R. Tolkien's The Hobbit won't be released until exactly one year this month, but the trailer gives fans a full scope of the epic prequel to Lord of the Rings. Set in Middle-earth 60 years before Tolkien's "The Lord of the Rings," the adventure of The Hobbit follows the journey of Bilbo Baggins, who is swept into an epic quest to reclaim the lost Dwarf Kingdom of Erebor from the fearsome dragon Smaug. Familiar faces to the Lord of the Rings trilogy appear in this first preview of The Hobbit including Ian McKellen as Gandalf the Grey, Cate Blanchett as Galadriel, and Ian Holm as the elder Bilbo. Not seen in the trailer were returning cast members Orlando Bloom as Legolas; Christopher Lee as Saruman; Hugo Weaving as Elrond; Elijah Wood as Frodo; and Andy Serkis as Gollum.
The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey will be released on December 14, 2012.
