AMC's The Walking Dead is a huge hit on television, and movie studios are hoping to translate that success to the big screen. Tons of zombie projects are heading our way 2013 with Brad Pitt's World War Z, Pride and Prejudice and Zombies, Warm Bodies and Zombieland 2. The films range from your average horror films to comedies. Zombies even made their way to kid projects with the animated ParaNorman starring Kodi Smit-McPhee and can now be seen on DVD and Blu-ray. During the animated comedies' world premiere this summer, CineMovie asked the ParaNorman star and premiere guest Wayne Brady why they think zombies are the "It" monsters.
The walking dead first made their film debut in the 1932 film White Zombie. The first feature length film spawned numerous copy cats throughout the years, but it wasn't until George Romero's Night of the Living Dead in 1968 that proved these monsters were profitable. Over the years, you had the average one or two projects a year including a long-running franchise with Resident Evil, but again the genre took a new life after Shaun of the Dead (2004) turned the undead into comic material. Movies like Zombieland then followed with a planned sequel in the works in 2013. Films like Pride and Prejudice and Zombies (in the works) and Warm Bodies in 2013 are hoping to give zombies a new twist as love interest in comedies. Now that we have to see.
Even big names are becoming zombies. Ryan Reynolds, Kevin Bacon, Jeff Bridges, and Mary-Loiuse Parker join the fun in the Dark Horse comic book adaptation of R.I.P.D. The action comedy, opening June 28, 2013, stars Ryan Reynolds as a slain cop in the Rest in Peace Department who seeks out his murderer.
