The Hobbit and The Dark Knight Rises

2011 was the year of superhero movies and 2012 will be the year of sequels and reboots with over 16 titles milking existing franchises to fill up the multi-plexes.  Some of the most anticipated film titles are sequels/reboots like The Dark Knight Rises, The Amazing Spider-Man, The Hobbit: An Expected Journey, and the last of the Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn II.

Many films came and went in 2011, but a few deserved much more attention. While some may have been indie movies, others were mainstream concepts that didn't catch on perhaps because they weren't marketed correctly. The good news is that some of our picks are getting some recognition with nominations for some of the actors during this award season and second of all, they are now available on DVD and Blu-ray.

Top Box Office Movies of 2011


The final chapter of the boy wizard topped the U.S. box office charts for 2011 followed by the third Transformers movie. Despite the $9.9 billion intake at the movies, the box office tally was lower than the previous year's $10.6 billion total gross.  Five-hundred and eighty-four films were released in 2011, fifty more films than in 2010.
