Spanish Film Festival Kicks Off In Los Angeles

The Spanish film festival Recent Spanish Cinema kicks off its series of outstanding Spanish films at the Egyptian Theatre in Los Angeles this week on October 13. The 2011 film series opens with the premiere of the official Spanish Entry for Best Foreign Language Film for the Academy Awards 2012, BLACK BREAD (PA NEGRE) directed by Agustí Villaronga and starring Nora Navas and Francesc Colomer.

The Recent Spanish Cinema series is sponsored by the Spanish Institute for Film and Audiovisual Arts (ICAA) a part of the Ministry of Culture, together with the American Cinematheque and EGEDA (Audio-visual Producers Rights Management Association).  The 17th edition of the series will run from October 13 - 16, 2011.  Actors Nora Navas and Alvaro Cervantes and director Achero Mañas will be in attendance as honorees.

This year’s selection of recent Spanish cinema highlights everything from the most exuberant genre pieces to dramas notable for their restrained subtlety. Selections include Daniel Sanchez Arevalo's comedy COUSINHOOD, about a trio of cousins on a pilgrimage back to the pueblo; Montxo Armendariz's DON'T BE AFRAID starring Belen Rueda, which looks with intense yet wrenching care at the long-term effects of a girl’s abusive upbringing; the nuanced and subversive ANYTHING YOU WANT from director Achero Mañas, a gender-questioning family drama about a man raising a young girl; Pau Freixas’ FOREVER YOUNG, about a group of pre-teens facing the trials of growing up one summer in the 1980s; TORRENTE 4: LETHAL CRISIS, the fourth installment in writer-director-star Santiago Segura's cult franchise about iconic lowlife cop Jose Luis Torrente; and Fernando Gonzalez Molina’s THREE METERS ABOVE THE SKY, starring Mario Casas as a short-fuse biker who falls for a girl from the other side of the tracks.

In addition to the lineup, the series will screen the short film Waterline by Sergio Abuja, the winning entry from the New Filmmakers from Spain short film contest, a competition for Spanish film students living in Los Angeles.
