Kathryn Stockett, author of "The Help," can't take credit for the movie, but the best-selling novelist can't contain her excitement over Octavia Spencer, Viola Davis, and Jessica Chastain's various nominations this award season for their characters in the big screen adaptation of her book.
As expected, THE HELP stars Octavia Spencer and Viola Davis lead the awards race for Best Actress and Supporting Actress with a Screen Actors Guild and Golden Globes nominations. They're co-star Jessica Chastain (The Debt, The Tree of Life), the breakout star of the year, is also nominated as Best Supporting Actress in the civil rights movement era drama. Many expect Academy Awards nominations for Viola and Octavia when they are announced January 24, 2012.At a recent Los Angeles event for the release of THE HELP on DVD and Blu-ray, Kathryn told CineMovie she was "excited" for the cast and felt more at ease about talking about the upcoming award season than the movie's stars or director.
"I'm so excited and I feel like I can talk a little bit more freely about Oscars then any of the cast and Tate(director) and the producers. It's really exciting to see them kind of shine in the spotlight and all the success and the anticipation. I'm thrilled I can't wait to see what happens."
Kathryn wrote The New York Times Best Selling book but admits she didn't have much contribution to the movie other than a small cameo. She attributes the movie's success to her friend - director Tate Taylor who also wrote the screenplay. Kathryn could have only hoped for something great. "I was just saying, "Oh, please just let it be good.'" And she wasn't disappointed.
While she adores the big screen adaptation of THE HELP, Stockett has her favorite scene which happens to star one of the nominees. At the start of the movie, Aibileen played by Viola Davis runs into baby girls room and performs a dance. Stockett describes Viola's performance as "unbelievable," she really is."
When it came to developing her novel, audience can't help but question if the main character Eugenia is a reflection of Kathryn. When thinking about her protagonist she can only see her as a fantasy of what she wished she could've done during her experience in the 50's and 60s.
"I wish that I have been that brave at her age and stepped up and said you know what everything that is going on in Mississippi in the south is horrible."
It wasn't until she stepped out of her bubble that she had a larger world perspective that the story came to her.
To see what all the fuss is all about, THE HELP is now out on DVD and Blu-ray.
