Two big A-list stars were not enough turn AFTER EARTH and OBLIVION into blockbusters. Was it the subject matter? Cruise’s last movie, JACK REACHER, also didn’t fare well with fans so having a well-known star is no guarantee especially when dealing with a depressing concept of a post-apocalyptic Earth.
However, the zombie in love comedy, WARM BODIES, got a great start earlier this year after it proved a moderate hit at the movies. Perhaps end of the world comedies with similar titles will attract more viewers.
The apocalypse is no laughing matter, but the next two films are having fun with the idea of it. On June 12, Hollywood celebrities play themselves in THIS IS THE END, a comedy derived from the crazy mind of Seth Rogen and his writing/co-directing partner Evan Goldberg. Rogen’s Hollywood friends James Franco, Emma Watson, Jonah Hill, Michael Cera and singer Rihanna play themselves as aliens take over Earth. Similarly, the team behind Shaun of the Dead and Hot Fuzz reunite for another comedy to complete their “trilogy” with a similar concept in THE WORLD’S END opening August 23, 2013. Simon Pegg, Nick Frost, Martin Freeman and Rosamund Pike star in the Edgar Wright film which also deals with aliens, but these extraterrestrials have body snatched most of the residents of the small town. And of course, they must save the world.
But what about the other action doomsday films? On June 20th, Brad Pitt takes on fast-moving zombies in the action thriller, WORLD WAR Z. Will the bad press about the troubled production hurt it’s chances at movie theaters?
Then you have Matt Damon starring in the futuristic ELYSIUM from District 9 director Neill Blompkamp opening August 9. Early previews have been positive with CineMovie getting a sneak peek at footage, but as we’ve learned from OBLIVION and AFTER EARTH, nothing is a sure thing.
