FRIGHT NIGHT, starring Colin Farrell and Anton Yelchin, doesn't open until August 13 but CineMovie got an exclusive 3D preview of the remake.
Dreamworks and Disney made FRIGHT NIGHT's sneak peek extra special with a visit to the Santa Monica editing suites. Armed with 3D glasses and sitting on a couch in one of the edit bays with director Craig Gillespie and an editor, Gillespie introduced four clips before watching the footage on a 3D television/monitor. The 3D wasn't disappointing given the living room-style experience, and the three-dimensional depth really added intensity to the scenes.
Afterwards, we sat down with Craig, Colin Farrell and Anton Yelchin for interviews which we will post in the coming weeks.
CineMovie likes to share, so for now we're breaking down each scene previewed. Enjoy a sneak peek. No Spoilers!
As a big fan of the original FRIGHT NIGHT, there was some worry the vampire-flick might either try to be a copycat of the 1985 film or taken into an entirely different direction but neither fear came true after watching the work-in-progress. The cat-and-mouse game / boy who cries wolf elements are still very much there but the last scene takes the action outside of Jerry and Charlie's home. That definitely peaked our interest.
Scene 1: Jerry Tries To Trick Charley Into Inviting Him In
Jerry (Colin Farrell) comes over to Charley's (Anton Yelchin) house on the pretense that he needs beer for his hot date. Charley obliges but keeps him standing outside the back door. As Charley gathers together enough beer for a six-pack, Jerry uses his charm to coax Charley into inviting him in but when that doesn't work, Jerry makes sexual references about his mother and his girlfriend Amy.
Colin Farrell as Jerry exudes sexiness but behind those dark eyes is a dangerous side, much like Chris Sarandon's portrayal in the first film. Anton is very different from the original Charley character in that he tries to act macho but you sense the fear in him. The chemistry between the two actors make the cat and mouse relationship work.
Scene 2: Charley Investigates A Scream From Jerry's House
Charley enters Jerry's home looking for the woman seen earlier with Jerry. He walks into a room with artifacts and a strange altar. He hears Jerry's car driving into the driveway. He has to find a place to hide. The closet provides a safe haven or does it? He leans against the back wall and a secret door leads into a room that looks like a confined mental ward with rooms. He finds the woman in one of the rooms and attempts to pick the lock but he hears Jerry coming. We'll leave it at that.
This is a welcome departure from the original film in that the basement is no longer the go to place for vampire movies. And we get to see Colin Farrell take his first bite. Brutal!
We can't tell you much about this scene because of the restrictions but he is no longer a tv personality. You could've guessed that one. However, he is still a showman, and played well by David Tennant best known for BBC's "Doctor Who" and rumored to play Thrandull in Peter Jackson's The Hobbit: Part 1.
Scene 4: Jerry Comes After Charley In His Home
The doorbell rings. Jane, Charley's mom (Toni Colette) offers to get it but Charley runs downstairs to investigate. Amy is standing inside after letting herself in. The doorbell rings again and Jane insist on opening the door but Charley begs her not to. Jerry knocks on the door and tells Jane he must speak with her or he will call the cops on Charley who broke into his house. Neither Jane or Amy believe Charley about Jerry being a vampire. Jane turns Jerry away. Now Jerry is mad. Let's just say he finds a way to get them out of the house and a chase ensues that takes place outside -- and that's just the end of the second act, according to Craig, who promises lots of action in the third act.
This scene definitely leaves you wondering how the final confrontation will come together now that the scenario has changed. Hmm! The only disappointment was not seeing Evil Ed played by Christopher Mintz-Plasse in any of the scenes but perhaps the trailer premiere will include his transformation.
