Once again Mexico is the setting for lawlessness, kidnapping, drug cartels and violence. The new movie GRINGO is the latest in Hollywood movies to stereotype the country down south. Directed by Joel Edgerton's brother Nash Edgerton, the film stars David Oyelowo, Charlize Theron, Joel Edgerton, Amanda Seyfried, Thandie Newton, Sharlto Copley and funny enough no Latino names for a movie titled after a Spanish word. There are Latinos in the cast, but judging from this latest trailer - they're all the bad guys.
In GRINGO, Harold Soyinka (David Oyelowo) is sent to Mexico by Charlize Theron and Joel Edgerton's greedy corporate executives for a seemingly easy job, but of course a gringo in the land down south can only lead to trouble as in most films made by Hollywood. The American characters are nonetheless no angels with questionable behavior that leads to the violence in Mexico. To be fair, the movie which opens March 9 in theaters hasn't screened yet, so we're only judging from the trailer.
Unfortunately we can only look to Mexican films for positive portrayals of Mexican life. Disney*Pixar's COCO is one of the only film made by Hollywood that celebrates Mexican culture, but films like GRINGO only further the negative view of a country that is so much more.
Official Synopsis:
GRINGO, a dark comedy mixed with white-knuckle action and dramatic intrigue, explores the battle of survival for businessman Harold Soyinka (David Oyelowo) when he finds himself crossing the line from law-abiding citizen to wanted criminal.
