In THE BIG WEDDING, DeNiro and Keaton play a divorced couple who have to pretend to still be married for the sake of their adopted son's (Ben Barnes) wedding to Amanda Seyfried. His ultra conservative biological mother from Colombia plans to attend the wedding, but she doesn't believe in divorce so the unhappy divorcees must put on happy faces for the Spanish-speaking stranger. DeNiro's girlfriend Susan Sarandon makes his life miserable during the time and Robin Williams is the family's priestly advisor.
Robert DeNiro and Diane Keaton are no strangers to playing parents to the bride/groom. DeNiro tortured his future son-in-law Ben Stiller in Meet The Parents and Diane Keaton made the rounds as mother of the bride in Father of the Bride with Steve Martin. Even Amanda Seyfried has had her share of wedding movies, having starred in the movie version of Mama Mia. And we've seen Robin Williams as a priest in another movie counseling an engaged couple. If this seems like familiar territory - it is. Weddings are no doubt fertile ground for drama and comedy, but the genre may be wearing thin.
THE BIG WEDDING sounds like a cross between Meet The Parents and Birdcage minus the gay couple, but the all-star cast may convince viewers to take in another movie about impending nuptials when it opens April 26, 2013.
- Official Synopsis:
- With an all-star cast led by Robert De Niro, Katherine Heigl, Diane Keaton, Amanda Seyfried, Topher Grace, with Susan Sarandon and Robin Williams, THE BIG WEDDING is an uproarious romantic comedy about a charmingly modern family trying to survive a weekend wedding celebration that has the potential to become a full blown family fiasco. To the amusement of their adult children and friends, long divorced couple Don and Ellie Griffin (De Niro and Keaton) are once again forced to play the happy couple for the sake of their adopted son's wedding after his ultra conservative biological mother unexpectedly decides to fly halfway across the world to attend. With all of the wedding guests looking on, the Griffins are hilariously forced to confront their past, present and future - and hopefully avoid killing each other in the process.
