Hollywood has a knack for timing movies. Before Edward Snowden was on the lam from the United States government as a whistleblower or some might say traitor, WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange faced the same dilemma and now there's a movie about the strange looking, platinum-haired man appropriately played by Star Trek's villain Benedict Cumberbatch. Watch the trailer to the new movie.

In the new preview, the question is raised whether Assange is a hero or dangerous man leaking government information that threatens national security. That will sound very familiar to those following the case of Edward Snowden in the news.  The new movie trailer comes at a good time when the subject matter is making the rounds on every news channel.

There is no doubt Benedict nails the look of Assange in THE FIFTH ESTATE, which will be released October 18. And the subject matter is sure to be a consideration for the upcoming award season.

Bill Condon (Dreamgirls, Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn Part 1 & 2) directs THE FIFTH ESTATE, from an book adaptation about the WikiLeaks founder and also stars Stanley Tucci, Laura Linney, Anthony Mackie (Pain & Gain) and David Thewlis (Harry Potter movies).

OFFICIAL SYNOPSIS:

Triggering our age of high-stakes secrecy, explosive news leaks and the trafficking of classified information, WikiLeaks forever changed the game. Now, in a dramatic thriller based on real events, THE FIFTH ESTATE reveals the quest to expose the deceptions and corruptions of power that turned an Internet upstart into the 21st century’s most fiercely debated organization. The story begins as WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange (Benedict Cumberbatch) and his colleague Daniel Domscheit-Berg (Daniel Brühl) team up to become underground watchdogs of the privileged and powerful. On a shoestring, they create a platform that allows whistleblowers to anonymously leak covert data, shining a light on the dark recesses of government secrets and corporate crimes. Soon, they are breaking more hard news than the world’s most legendary media organizations combined. But when Assange and Berg gain access to the biggest trove of confidential intelligence documents in U.S. history, they battle each other and a defining question of our time: what are the costs of keeping secrets in a free society—and what are the costs of exposing them?"
