Charlie Cox and Vincent D’Onofrio reprise their roles as anti-hero Matt Murdock/Daredevil and Marvel villain Wilson Fisk, in the rebirth of Daredevil: Born Again for Disney+. The two actors reveal the two share a frenemies type of relationship. “The better friends we become, the easier it is to hate each other, says D’Onofrio.”

In the Netflix Daredevil series, Charlie Cox and Vincent D’Onofrio took on the Marvel characters ten years ago. Over the years, the actors became close despite only having a few scenes together in the past and the new series.

Charlie Cox Interview: Actor's Introduction as the Daredevil

At a recent press conference for Marvel Studios’ Daredevil: Born Again, D’Onofrio and Cox banter about their close relationship over the years and how it informs the few scenes they’ve shared on both series.

Daredevil: Born Again is now streaming on Disney+.

VINCENT: So, how many scenes do you think we’ve done over the last 10 years?

CHARLIE: Like, five or six.

VINCENT: Probably like five or six only. But it’s so good when you do. It’s good for us as the actors, you know, ‘cause we just like doing scenes together.

CHARLIE: You said something yesterday which I think is great, which is like over the last 10 years obviously, we’ve become very good friends. And the good news is that it does feel like the better friends we become, the easier it is to hate each other.

VINCENT: It’s so true.

MODERATOR: With like no consequences, I feel like.

VINCENT: Well, no, you develop, because we’ve known each other for so long and we love playing these roles, we have a lot in common. And you fall, you know, I’ve fallen in love with Charlie. And the more I love him, the more I love to hate him. You know, it’s great. It’s great. I mean, and, you know, to be serious about it, you know, the other thing is trust. You know, we trust each other a lot. I know that when I’m in the studio, you know, when we’re shooting this thing, it’s usually he’s in one side of the studio. I don’t even know what they’re doing.

VINCENT: And I’m in another side of the studio doing something else. And I know that that side of the show is gonna be fine. Like, I never have to question.

CHARLIE: I feel the same way.

VINCENT: I have complete confidence in whatever is going on that I have nothing idea about. And it gives me a lift on my side to
know that knowledge. And that’s because of our team and I think Charlie, you know, in a big way. So, yeah. It’s great to have this kind of relationship with your partner in crime. Yeah.

MODERATOR: Yeah.

BRAD WINDERBAUM (EP): And in those rare scenes that you’re together, that trust comes out in like such a wild way.

VINCENT: Yeah.

BRAD (EP): You guys, you go for it in subtle ways that people who don’t believe in each other couldn’t have pulled off.

VINCENT: Yeah. I mean, we’ve, I don’t know how we did it, but we sort of have developed a shorthand, you and I.

CHARLIE: Yeah.

VINCENT: We think very similar about our notes are always very similar. And if they’re not, we just fall into a collaboration without even thinking about it. Because we know that we have to deliver stuff that makes sense to him. If we have notes, we want to, ‘cause we don’t wanna go in and say hey, I’d rather say this word than that word.

Or say I’m gonna come through with that sentence or, you know, like, but we think story. And that’s always helpful for a writer, rather than just say I’d really like to do this. It’s more about, you like the little voice I just did?

CHARLIE: I loved it. That was me.

VINCENT: Yes, actually. I’m just saying, we prep really well together and collaborate really well together.
