THE SHAPE OF WATER was the big winner at the 90th Academy Awards Sunday night. Mexican director Guillermo del Toro calls this fantasy film his most personal film, and it payed off with four Oscars including Best Director for del Toro and Best Picture. The film's original score by Alexandre Desplat took home the statue as well as production design. The new and improved Hulk in THOR: RAGNAROK was a genius re-invention of the character. No longer a strictly CGI character, the special effects team turned the not-so-jolly green giant into a walking, talking and emotional character. Stop-motion director Nick Park returns with his latest film, EARLY MAN. The stop-motion film has many scenes in a crowd-filled stadium. Given that every character and prop is made of clay in a stop-motion movie, the animators stop at creating 35,000 puppets for those sequences so they look to newer technology for a little help.

BLACK PANTHER isn’t just a blockbuster superhero movie. For a lot of people, specifically people of color and women, it’s the chance to see yourself reflected on the screen and feeling empowered. The Marvel movie poses a lot of questions about how we are as a people, our history of oppression and the responsibility that comes with having power. Big action pieces are often mindless popcorn flicks, but that's not the case with BLACK PANTHER.
