Scully and Mulder continue their quest for the truth in the 11th season of "The X-Files" which also marks the 25th anniversary of the Chris Carter series. CineMovie had the opportunity to watch the first two episodes, and in X-Files fashion, expect more conspiracies and and revelations that will make your head explode. Below is our SPOILER-FREE review of the show, Chris Carter's personal message about the show, and the episode guide for the first five shows.
Gillian Anderson and David Duchovny are back as Scully and Mulder in their quest to find their son, William, and uncover the latest controversies. "The X-Files" creator Chris Carter had this to say about the new season.
Also of significance this time was our running start, and it shows in the arc of episodes that make up this event series. The stories are original, personal and timely. The tonal shifts, which are a hallmark of the show, range throughout the sci-fi genre. The elasticity of THE X-FILES may be its most enduring quality. That, and the remarkable talent of David Duchovny and Gillian Anderson to continue to breathe new life into Agents Mulder and Scully.
After Season 10, the show and the network received backlash over the lack of female voices behind the scenes. Carter also addressed that in the same statement saying season 11 added three women writers and two women directors. The newbies joined the original gang of Glen Morgan, James Wong and Darin Morgan.
In the new season of "The X-Files," there is no obvious difference of having female writers or directors with the show continuing the same tone and humor that has always been consistent throughout including in the new seasons. As a matter of fact, the shows stick to the same formula in which important information is revealed, but the next episode stands as a stand alone which leaves you high and dry.
The beginning of the premiere episode does not pick-up where season 10 ended with a space ship hovering over our heroes. It might help to re-watch the season 10 finale as I was a bit confused where Season 11, Episode 1 picks up. I won't reveal any other information to keep the surprise element, but I will say the opening episode does it's job in twists and turns with a big suprise that will leave viewers flabbergasted.
That's the good news. The bad news is that the second episode in the new season doesn't address the climax of episode one. As in X-Files fashion, the second episode is a stand alone case, but it is tied to the first episode with a litte more information about a secretive group that made themselves known in Episode 1. The Wikipedia page for the current season of "The X-Files" states season 11 will feature two mythology episodes and eight standalone episodes. It will take more than two episodes to deal with the bombshell dropped in Episode 1. The truth is out there, but they are dragging it out.
Given that Gillian Anderson has said season 11th will be her last, does it mean this is the last season? If so, the truth better be wrapped up in a nice bow for us long-time fans.
