Gael Garcia Bernal and Diego Luna Produce SIN NOMBRE

The names Gael Garcia Bernal ("Amores Perros", "Y Tu Mama Tambien") and Diego Luna ("Y Tu Mama Tambien", "Milk") may not sound familiar to mainstream audiences but in Mexico and independent cinema, their name carries weight.  The pair who starred together in Alfonso Cuaron’s “Y Tu Mama Tambien” joined forces in 2004 to produce movies under Canana Films and set to release one of their productions. Like their acting choices, the two set out to produce films independent from Hollywood.  Gael and Diego lend their names as producers to Cary Joji Fukunaga “Sin Nombre” which translates to ‘no name’.   With such heavy weights attached to the film, the pair hope their fans turn out for the gritty socio-political thriller set on the Mexican border where gangs traffic humans and drugs across to the United State. In a recent interview (listen below) with the friends and partners, Diego Luna and Gael Garcia Bernal discuss their reasons for opening a production company, their personal attachment to the “Sin Nombre” story, and why pirated movies and marijuana should be legalized.

“Sin Nombre” opens in limited theaters March 20, 2009.  The duo reunite again on screen in their next release this spring in “Rudo y Cursi” directed by Alfonso Cuaron’s brother, Carlos Cuaron.
