'Snow White and the Huntsman' Costume Designer Colleen Atwood Interview

Kristen Stewart and Charlize Theron not only have to act the part of a warrior Snow White and the Evil Queen in SNOW WHITE AND HUNTSMAN, but look the part as well- thanks to costume designer Colleen Atwood. CineMovie sits down with the three-time Academy Award-winning designer to discuss her approach to creating costumes befitting the new twist to the iconic characters.

David Gonzales sat down with the Washington State native to talk about fitting Kristen Stewart as the warrior princess in armor and the challenge she initially imagined when she first heard of the concept. "Oh, no! A girl in armor." Once she read the script she tasked herself with making Snow White NOT just a girl in armor, but feature elements of "her people" in the design in addition to making the outfit less slick.

Designing Charlize Theron's Evil Queen wardrobe, was the fun part, according to the award-winning designer. "It was such a great character," she said, but her goal in creating the "evil looking" costumes were to maintain a sense of the human qualities.  But as the character decays, so does the wardrobe .

The SNOW WHITE AND THE HUNTSMAN Costume Designer also touched upon how CGI has made her work easier. Prior to CGI, designers had to dress thousand of extras for a battle scene, for example. whereas now a large crowd could be inserted later thanks to the new technology.

For Colleen Atwood, she can't say which genre she likes working in the best but she admits they each have their perks.
