The Vow stars Channing Tatum and Rachel McAdams

Valentine's Day is in the air as the romantic drama The Vow raked in $41 million dollars over the weekend, beating out the Ryan Reynolds and Denzel Washington's action flick.

The Channing Tatum and Rachel McAdams love story topped the charts with Safe House a close second with $39.3.  The two other new entries also debuted with solid numbers as Journey 2: Mysterious Island ($27.6 mil) and the Star Wars 3D  reissue of The Phantom Menace ($23.0 mil) took third and forth place respectively.

The Vow also surprised many by being the highest opening for a movie release so far in the new year. The pre-Valentines weekend also brought out the crowds as the box office experienced a surge in ticket sales. Date night paid off as the four new flicks took in a combined 131.6 million alone making for the best box office weekend in a long time.

Channing Tatum is becoming quite the romantic lead as his previous romantic drama Dear John also came at number one at $30.6 million in April of 2010.  Of course it doesn't hurt to have The Notebook's Rachel McAdams in the film as well.
