Diego Luna Interview: 'Who Cares' If People are Offended by CASA DE MI PADRE (Audio)

Will Ferrell's CASA DE MI PADRE may offend certain groups but actor Diego Luna doesn't care because he had a lot of fun with his comedic turn in the Spanish language film as Ferrell's brother.

Will Ferrell's parody on telenovelas and Mexploitation films in CASA DE MI PADRE opened in the top 10 at the weekend box office with a $2.3 million take in only 382 theatres.  Considered a successful release for a foreign-language comedy, the satire conceived and produced by Will Ferrell, also avoided a backlash or complaints from particular groups.

Ferrell's co-star Diego Luna sat down with CineMovie to discuss his role in the satire.  When asked if the Mexican-born actor was concerned with the story poking fun at Mexican culture, Luna said the film is less of a commentary on Mexican pop culture and more so a statement about Americans and actors.

"I think it's going to be more the American audience that is going to be offended by many scenes and lines that Will Ferrell has about Americans. It's there.  We have to understand it's a comedy and it's a satire of many things... politics, Mexico, the relation between Mexico and the States, of the world we're living in.  But also about film and spaghetti westerns, soap operas and just the process of filmmaking.  I think there will be many actors offended also.  Who cares!  I enjoyed the journey a lot. "

Luna, however, did do a sort of "wink, wink" to native Spanish speakers by improvising some of his dialogue. His boss and co-star Will Ferrell and director Matt Piedmont do not speak Spanish but they let the Mexican star ad lib some of his Spanish dialogue.  He loved improvising on set and often messed with the director and the Anchorman actor by asking them their thoughts on his unrehearsed performance, but they had no clue what he was adding.  "They had to trust me," Diego told CineMovie.

"I sent messages in my scenes to the Spanish speakers.   I said everything I wanted."

Given it was Luna's first time acting in a comedy on screen, Luna surprised himself with his comedic skills.  He admits to being scared at the onset of filming but his training from his theatre background in Mexico came into play once they started rolling.
