Guillermo del Toro is celebrating Pan's Labyrinth's 20th anniversary with a 3D and HDR remastering. Del Toro screened a few 3D clips from the Academy Award-winning masterpiece for fans at San Diego's Comic-Con. The filmmaker explained to the audience that the easy way to accomplish the conversion was through the use of A.I., and used an expletive to reject the technology, and render the 3D by hand with thousands of artists at work.

Pan's Labyrinth is one of del Toro's greatest cinematic achievements, blending Guillermo Navarro's Oscar-winning cinematography with a bold story that explores the horrors of domestic violence through a dark, magical fairy tale.
In one of the clips previewed with our 3D glasses, the fairy guides the young girl to a dark pathway. The fairy is within hand's reach, and the 3D enhances the gorgeous visuals. In another clip, the young girl encounters the ancient creature in the labyrinth. Filled with magical creatures and fantastical elements, Pan's Labyrinth is the perfect film to enhance with 3D.
The director also revealed that the cost of the expensive custom hand-converted 3D came out of his own pocket because he believes in the artistry behind it and didn't want to go the easy route with A.I.
After watching the preview, the conversion is not merely a cash grab for its 20th Anniversary but rather a work of art that will be a sight to see when Pan's Labyrinth is re-released in 3D, 4K, and HDR on October 9th, which is del Toro's birthday.
