Fashion beat fatalities at the domestic box office this weekend as The Devil Wears Prada 2 held onto the No. 1 spot with an impressive $43 million in its second weekend. The sequel dropped only 44% from its debut, pushing its domestic total to nearly $145 million, surpassing the original 2006 film in its second week, and continuing its strong momentum with Mother’s Day audiences.
Debuting in second place, Mortal Kombat II opened with a solid $38.5 million domestically. While the video game adaptation delivered strong premium format numbers and a better per-screen average than Prada, it couldn’t overcome the fashion sequel’s broad appeal. Still, the Warner Bros. release marked a much stronger debut than the 2021 film and should remain a major player heading into the summer season.
Holding strong in third place was Michael with $36.5 million in its third weekend. The Michael Jackson biopic continues to dominate globally and recently surpassed Bohemian Rhapsody as the highest-grossing music biopic domestically.
Among the weekend’s newcomers, The Sheep Detectives debuted in fourth place with $15.9 million. The family-friendly murder mystery starring Hugh Jackman opened decently but will need strong word-of-mouth to justify its sizable budget. Meanwhile, Billie Eilish: Hit Me Hard and Soft - The Tour Live in 3D launched with $7.5 million, drawing solid turnout from fans and performing particularly well overseas.
The rest of the top 10 featured familiar holdovers, including The Super Mario Galaxy Movie, which added another $6.6 million as it closes in on the $1 billion mark worldwide, and Project Hail Mary, which continued its strong run with over $327 million domestic. Smaller titles like Hokum, Deep Water, and Animal Farm saw steep declines heading into a crowded summer movie season.
