Joseph Gordon-Levitt doesn’t take the Bruce Willis/DIE HARD approach in the hijacking thriller, 7500 by Patrick Vollrath in his feature film debut. Instead Gordon-Levitt plays an everyman relying on the assailant’s humanity to save the day.
Bella Thorne ("The Duff," MIDNIGHT SUN) and Jake Manley ("The Order," HOLIDATE) are a modern day Bonnie & Clyde except one of them isn't interested in money but social media fame in INFAMOUS. Written and directed by Joshua Caldwell, the crime caper is a morality tale in the age of social media when everyone is looking to cash in on instant fame no matter the cost.
Elisabeth Moss delivers yet another riveting performance in her new movie, SHIRLEY, reminding us why she's the best actress this generation. Based on Susan Scarf Merrell's book, "Shirley: A Novel" about reclusive horror and mystery author Shirley Jackson played by Moss, SHIRLEY is not so much a biography but a study into the mind of a writer. Actress Odessa Young, in a breakthrough performance, engages with Moss in a sort of cat and mouse game that's unique and intriguing.
INHERITANCE stars Lily Collins and Simon Pegg playing cat and mouse. The new movie coming to On Demand and Digital May 22, may be one of the most original films in a while but too bad the climax left too many holes in the story.
VILLAIN is a British import you won't care for at the start with an unlikely lead who looks like he could rip your head off but English actor Craig Fairbrass (AVENGEMENT, CLIFFHANGER) turns in a charismatic performance that flips that first impression. VILLAIN will be available On Demand and Digital May 22.
Leave it to the Brits to give us another gem of a movie. HOW TO BUILD A GIRL stars American actress Beanie Feldstein adopting a British accent to play a spunky 16-year-old. You'll leave this movie wanting more of this character. Luckily many of us have plenty of time to watch this coming-of-age story over and over again On Demand starting May 8.
Actor Clark Duke (HOT TUB MACHINE, KICK-ASS) makes his feature film directorial debut with ARKANSAS starring an impressive cast that includes Liam Hemsworth (THE HUNGER GAMES, INDEPENDENCE DAY: RESURGENCE), Vince Vaughn, John Malkovich and Duke in a leading role which he steals. While ARKANSAS starts out promising, a diversion in the plot ruins the flow of the movie. Watch video review below.
TO THE STARS by indie filmmaker Martha Stephens (LAND HO!) is a sweet coming of age story set in 1960s Oklahoma, but a damning portrayal of small town life in America.
There's been plenty of Ned Kelly movies about the Australian outlaw, but the latest, TRUE HISTORY OF THE KELLY GANG, based on Peter Carey's book, is more of an origins story in the same vein as JOKER (2019). And no surprise, a domineering mother is at the root of this story.
Star George MacKay who plays the famous outlaw is proving he's an up-and-coming actor to watch for with his stand out performance as Ned Kelly as well as his riveting role in Sam Mendes' 1917. Nicholas Hoult also makes quite the impression as morally corrupt while Russell Crowe and Charlie Hunnam have small but impactful roles. Director Justin Kurzel gives this Ned Kelly biopic a punk rock attitude with an apocalyptic tone.
