Michelle Rodriguez Interview: 'My Future Doesn't Include Acting'

Michelle Rodriguez doesn't see herself in front of the cameras in 10 years. The RESIDENT EVIL: RETRIBUTION star sees herself leaving the acting business for a behind the scenes role as a writer and producer which her Avatar director James Cameron inspired.
Michelle Rodriguez returns from the dead in the fifth installment of the Resident Evil franchise. Ironically, she's also resurrected for the sixth Fast and the Furious series after been killed off in the fourth film. At a recent RESIDENT EVIL: RETRIBUTION press event, Rodriguez opened up about where she sees hersefl 10 years down the road. Known for her tough-chick roles, the actress could easily see herself behind the camera instead of in front of it.
"I'll probably disappear from the big screen and start moving on to why I got into the business in the first place. I'm a big procrastinator. It's taken me 13 years to even get down my ideas on paper."The New York native is currently writing three scripts: Kingdom Come, a thriller involving mother nature’s wrath; Sedated, a drama about drug addiction a la Darren Aronofsky's Requium For A Dream; and Matriarch Society, another action thriller involving a female secret society. While most filmmakers and actors keep their projects hush-hush, Rodriguez enthusiastically shared her high-concept ideas with CineMovie. Currently, she doesn’t have plans to write herself into any of the roles in the film, in keeping with her goal of staying off the silver screen, but nothing is set in stone, she admitted.
The actress’s works-in-progress are heavily influenced by her personal causes, and play out like morality tales from the sound of it. The animal rights and environmental activist is very conscious in using the medium to convey a deeper message without sacrificing the value of entertainment.
“I'd rather do a big massive movie with about maybe 20 minutes of depth within the whole film that reaches everyone or millions of people around the world. As opposed to a 2-hour film that is deep, and 5 people watch and are inspired. That's why I don't do indie movies anymore.”The 34-year-old learned those lessons from her Avatar director James Cameron. James Cameron had a big influence on her decision to focus on mainstream films with depth to the subject matter. In describing her own scripts, she says there is a bit of “Mission Impossible stuff mixed in” because there should be some elements of “cool” that will entertain movie-goers. She credits her new attitude to the blockbuster director.
"One thing I love about Jim Cameron is ability to take really powerful and deep, and watering it down for everyone to be able to swallow, and actually understand. Has heart to it. He's been the best at that and my biggest role model for that. And that's the format I'd love to follow."The self-described video junkie admits she'll occasionally use the excuse of having writer's block when a new video game premieres like the recent Modern Warfare. Instead of writing, she'll spend 12 hours playing against herself and online gamers. However, the motivated actress plans on finishing the scripts soon since she worries time is passing her by quickly. “I’m getting old,” proclaimed the Resident Evil star.
CineMovie can’t wait to see those great projects come to life, but in the meantime enjoy her time in front of the camera in RESIDENT EVIL: RETRIBUTION in theaters September 14, 2012.
